Forester: I moved to Maryland 30 years ago to escape Upstate New York Winters... This is not the way it is supposed to be! We usually get snow, and five days later it is all melted. Might not happen this time... And they are calling for more snow tomorrow. I like some snow, but enough is enough, there is a reason I don't live in Buffalo!

After this weekend, 8-12" will be childs play. The blower was on my mind all weekend, but I know if I get it it will be another 90 years before we get this much snow again

Nubota: You are 100% correct, it will be another 90 years before we see this much snow again. It won't stop me from looking at a snow blower though! Where are we supposed to put this stuff anyway? I've got no room for more snow, and all the homes I plow are in the same spot!

It's an awful lot like when we had the ice storm back in '98. Some went 30 days with no power. There are a TON of kero heaters and generators sitting collecting dust. The ones bought for the "special occasion" will probably never work when the time of need arises.

But then, not much can go wrong with a snowblower when not used.

I have a little, old MTD blower that I use for the walk to my porch and in tight areas, but mainly when I go to do my folks and the MILs driveways. The are 15 miles away in "dense" suburbia with small driveways, so there is no point trailering the BX for the effort. So once I dig out we head over with shovels and the little blower. This past weekend, I wished I had pulled the trailer out before it all hit. I tell the DW wife so, and she suggests I just get one the big blowers - of course she's thinking a self powered one so she and the boys can use it if I am not around (they are leery of the BX) - and I am thinking a rear mount for the BX.

So I have permission for a new toy, and her mother even offered to buy it and sadly I am thinking - "another engine to maintain", "need to store it somewhere", "it will never get used enough to justify the expense", etc, etc and upon relaying this logic to the DW - she looks at me like I have two heads.

I must have been out in the cold too long.......

My wife at least understands the not wanted another engine to maintain. It took her a while to understand the "need" for a tractor at all on our little 1 acre property, but it gets plenty of use. We got 18" of snow this past weekend with another 12-18 coming tonight. She is an ICU nurse, and must go to work come h**l or high snow, and now understands.

I bought a 60" rear mount blower this past summer. Boy am I glad I did. Go for the rear mount. Cut cadet, and Troy Bilt both sell 45" walk behinds with 13HP engines on them. Both have dual wheels. I imagine they are both a handful in deep/heavy snow. Also, keep in mind (and remind your wife) that your BX has almost twice the power as that.

My JD 4010 does great with all this snow with turf tires, FEL and 6' back blade. We've about 24" on the ground and expecting 4-8" more to break our 54.7" record today or tomorrow. Here are some pics from around the house.

The tractor sucked (I think) a tad of water yesterday when I was down the street revving it to get some big scoops of snow from a neighbor's property. It died and restarted but gave a few hesitations on the way back. I immediately came back to give it some fuel system treatment and a top off with kero. May have been a tiny puddle of water in the bottom of the fuel bowl.

That's my biggest hang-up. Another tool, even rarely used, is nice to have.

But with just about every other device you can go make use of it if you want to - any time you want. Chain saw been sitting, go find something to cut down. Power has stayed on, fire up the generator out in the woods and build something

Blower - single use at the whim of nature. The tractor, RB and FEL get used all the time, even if they aren't the best tool in heavy snow

Good stuff Jas. The wife never gives me grief for my toys, other than some teasing, but also tries not to encourage me either...

So the quandary I have now - get 3pt blower or stand alone. The latter would make a nice compliment, in the teenagers' hands, to the BX equipped with FEL and blade. Plus it is more portable - so I could send them to grandma's without me. But the 3pt would be all mine! With optimum seat time!

I was torn too, as I knew the RB and the FEL would do it for 95% of the snows we get (which, they have done --- Saturday was the first time I used the blower -- didn't use the 50" Meteor that I had before it (came with previous tractor)).

BUT -- I'm SOOOO glad to have it when I needed -- will need it again tomorrow. I'm heading out to the barn right now to hook it back up.

I am no big fan of Al Gore but global warming theories indicate that one of the results for those of us in the Mid-Atlantic Region would be an increase in snowy winters due to the increase in warm water masses in the Pacific (El Nino Effect). Again, no Al Gore fan here but if Global Warming theories are correct then we will have more very snowy winters in the Mid-Atlantic area, not less.

The biggest use item for us has been chainsaws. The Va. pines throughout the area are loading up with snow and over they go. Spent Friday night, Saturday and part of Sunday just getting our neighborhood open.
Snowing now and I can see two more pines that toppled sometime during the night, Aggggh.
