Oil & Fuel john deere oil filters?????????

whatsup fellas?its been a while since i was on here but i need to know something that i bet you gents can help me with.i need to change the oil on my jd 5203 and want to use the best oil filter that i can.who makes jd oil filters?are they better than say a purolator oil filter?i made up my mind to use rotella t 5w-40 synthetic but just don't know what filter to go with.i use and like purolator oil filters in all my other machines but none of them are diesel.so what should i do fellas.is the deere oil filters the best or what?

An OEM branded filter was actually manufactured by someone else and painted for your tractor company.


But, by buying the OEM filter, you can be assured it meets your manufacturers specs. A high quality oil filter from NAPA or cross referenced by Wix would no doubt be fine, but are the savings all that substantial? You only use one a year.

I can tell you that the Napa brand oil and hydralic filters are more expensive than Deere brand . I just did my 100 hr service and need to get a wrench that would fit my hydralic filter and Nape has them so I used it to size the wrench and the parts man told me the filter was $40 bucks when I paid $30 for the oem and the oil filter was $12. I would buy the oem.... Bull

We've never had a problem using OEM, WIX/NAPA, Purolator, or Fram (although a lot of guys don't like them!!) filters on a wide variety of equipment, both gas and diesel. We do use more NAPA than anything else, but that's 'cause the NAPA guy is just down the road, and he stocks pretty much everything we need.

Seriously, I'd worry more about cost/availability than the name on the piece.

If you have the OEM filter number, the Purolator guy can cross it for you, or you can go to their site and cross it yourself.

Yep...JD Filters in my Deere's, AC Delco's in the 2 GMC trucks, Honda filters on her car.
The reason I buy those brands is because they arent just because I know they work, not to mention they are cheaper then a Napa Gold (Wix)...IF the OEM filters get more expensive, then I'll shop around....

Yup... my JD dealer sells both. If he's out of stock for the OEM filter's - he'll walk across the aisle and grab a Fleetguard from the shelf.

Funny thing, though. The Fleetguard costs more than the JD filters... And the NAPA Gold is even more!

Same thoughts I had on it. Not so sure that the filters are that much better, or any for that fact, but for one a year I just get what Deere recommends for my machine. I use the Deere oil too and just go with what is in the manual.

I hope you never have failure caused by a Wic/Napa filter . It happened to me. $10,000.00 (plus labor) Hydro drive unit. (953 Cat loader) Both pump & motors destroyed with Wic/Napa filters. Just because the filter will install/screw-on Wic/Napa will say the filter will work. Cat. voided all warranty with any Wic/Napa filters installed! Ouch!!!!

During warranty period, it would seem foolish to risk anything other than the OEM filter. If anything should happen when using the branded filter, your warranty is covered absolutely. If you put on another filter, you risk trying to get a settlement out of a NAPA or a Fram or a whatever. I just cannot imagine having to get one of those outfits to settle with me. Ugh. If a OEM filter fails, for whatever reason, the dealer who sold me both the tractor and that OEM filter is gonna make good on it. That's my thinking. After the warranty is up, then that's a whole new ballgame.

I needed to replace my hydraulic filters a couple of weeks ago and i found out how expensive they were from JD, so i called around and NAPA and Oreillys were both higher priced so i bought the JDs. You would think the aftermarket ones would be cheaper. I couldn't belive that a hyd filter cost $37.00, but they do.

I use JD filter for tractor,, In or out of warranty ,as others have said, buying 1 engine filter,or hyd filter a year , most of the time the other brands cost more.

I'm no expert, but from reading several other sites (such as "Bob is the Oil Guy) from people who know a heck of a lot more than I do, that JD makes fine maintanence products at reasonable prices. The oil especially gets rave reviews. Not only is the cost usually lower than non-OEM products, it gives me an excuse to visit my dealer & say hi. I feel it shows support for my dealer and makes me a familiar face the next time I purchase a new tractor.

I "worked out a deal" were my dealer gave me a better price if I bought an entire case of oil (6-1 gal jugs) of the 0w-40 Plus50 Synthetic...got it cheaper then Delvac1 or Mobil 1...so I now run JD oil in ALL my vehicles here...

Hmm... 1 gallon jugs? Talked with my dealer and he said that it only comes in 2-1/2 gal jugs or 5 gallon pails.

I went with the 5 gallon buckets for both Hy-Gard lo-vis hyd oil and the Plus50 Synthetic engine oil.

I was kinda concerned about "measuring" the number of pumps needed to make a quart - a gallon - etc. and dust collecting around the spout, drips, messy, etc.

Not a problem. Instead of a row (or two) of gallon jugs and quart bottles taking up room on the garage shelf - I've got 2 pails on the floor - and an empty gallon jug with measured points for a quart, etc.

Mobil 1 is $23.50/gallon at Wal-Mart. Plus50 at my JD dealer is $15.90/gallon. I've got everything switching over to Plus50.

He USED to be right, as up until recently that was true. This fall they released gallon containers, and they dropped the 2.5 gal jugs....

Parts MGR offered me a good deal on a pail of 0w40....but for the same reason as you, I didnt want to mess with measuring out the correct amount of quarts, etc.. I am keeping my empty gallon jugs though so if I can get that same deal on a pail, I will just refill my 5 gallons...

I keep a pail of HyGard LoVis in stock here too....

Just curious, is 5W40 safe to use in the Mississippi summer heat?
