My uncle used a 3-16 plow for over 30 years in clay soil behind a 50hp 2wd tractor with no problem. My guess is a 7040 4wd with ballasted rear tires would have no problem with a 3-16 plow in easy soil.

I pull a three bottom with my M 6800 easily. You will have no problem at all.

No, it is R-1's, 16.9x30.I know that, but does he have these tires and not R-4's. Can't plow with R-4's.
I was asking the question because the M7040 seems a little lighter weight and smaller engine (203 cid and no turbo) than a 70hp tractor I owned in the past. I THINK if I weight it up it should be OK. I'm also assuming that if I make the tread width as wide as possible the plow will track properly.

Good on the tires.
I'd suggest first setting the plow up to track straight away behind the tractor, then set the furrow wheel at the right position. Land wheel can be set the same from center.

We've pulled a JD 1600 moldboard plow (3x16) with our JD 2550 (2wd) for years. Its a little bigger tractor than a M7040 as it weighs about 10,000lbs fully ballasted and is 65 PTO hp. In tough yellow clay that plow is all that tractor can handle. However, I assume yours is 4wd, and based on your soil you shouldn't have any trouble. As mentioned above, you'll need to set your front and rear tread width properly which should be in the plow manual, I can't recall the proper width off the top of my head.
