Hours, condition, reasons for selling, signs of abuse, tire wear, broken parts, scratches, seat cover.......all can reveal information about how the tractor was used for the hours shown.

Get the owner to drive it around and put it to work. If FEL, have him/her demonstrate attaching and unhooking the FEL. Have something demo'd on the 3 ph. If anything is wrong, the owner may balk at showing it to you.

Check out the Deere site for specs and options, to get a good feeling what you might look for when you check it out.

What do you know about this tractor already?

it is a 2004 model with 340 hours, transmission is e hydro, and it a 4x4. it has a FEL. how much would the tractor be valued at.

Some google searching will give you some ideas on the pricing/value. I would say in the $20k range of 20 - 25. With only 340 hours, it is barely broken in.
Where are you located? What was the tractor used for the last 5 years? Obviously sat around most of the time. :)

You can also get the Serial Number and take it to any John Deere dealer for a history on the machine.

What if I just replaced the air filter? I believe I would look at many other factors than just the air filter.

Point made... but, a telling thing about equipment is how it's been maintained - or not.

Certainly the air filter is ONE thing to look at; among a number of other aspects to check out on the machine.

Ask about service records. I have records for my equipment. Has the dealer done any repairs or warranty work?

When you look the tractor over; you're checking for unusal wear or repairs (good ones or bad). Loader pins, zerks, hoses, bucket, (as noted - tires, seat), hyd cylinders, brakes. Check engine oil and tranny oil for color, smells.

When you and the owner run and work it a bit; you're checking for anything that doesn't seem right. No smoke, no knocks, throttle and all the pedals work smoothly, 3pt lifts and drops and no leaks. PTO engages and shuts off. Tranny shifts and works in all ranges.

340 hours ain't much - 3 oil changes. Best of luck.
