My Horse Barn in Progress

Very nice looking barn. Our partitions are held in by a steel U channel that the boards slide in to - they are tongue and groove 2 x 6 with the bottom boards PT. One thing you might consider is putting a polyurethane clear coating or something similar over the stall walls. We did that and found that it helps keep it cleaner. Manure splashes wash off of it a lot easier. Another thing we found useful was placing outlets up above the front of the stalls. We have individual fans plugged in above the stalls for hot days when they are in. The high outlets keeps the cords away from them. Keep the pictures coming - I am enjoying following your progress. - Mike

Geez, and to think I thought goats were dumb. From the behaviors you have described here and on other posts about horses, in comparison, goats are pretty darned smart.

Actually, I think they're both smart. Unfortunately, you have to figure in the "fear factor" on horses. I've often said they're an accident waiting to happen.:D

Yep, Wish I had done that.

Perfect! That and the T&G should work out nice, how big are your stalls? This is what I did but did not nail or screw the T&G to either side of the sandwich. This made the T&G removable when foaling time came as I would open up two stalls for the mother to be. It worked out well. I used PT T&G between the stalls as I figured it was stronger. A mother to be horse can get really rambunctious in a stall.

The stalls are 12x12, so I'll definitely have to remove a wall for foaling. That was part of my reasoning for using screws, rather than nails.

If your goats are anything like our old Angora, they're too smart for their own good! She can be a real PIA. She learned that she can jump through the electric fence without getting bit if she's not touching the ground. If she wants in or out, she will walk the fence until she finds a point she can jump through without touching the ground or getting hung up. Then, zip, through! If she can't find a usable spot, she'll come back to the gate, stand and butt it with her horns until she tears the chain link off the gate, then walk through!! Witch!! We love her, but man can she be a PIA!

Well, let's see her try to get through that 70,000 pounds of concrete around your stalls when you get 'em done next year!

I have no boubt that she will ignore the concrete and either beat on the door or find a way to unlock and open it. The concrete wasn't as much for strength of the walls, as so that I can go in and hose everything out without worrying about things rotting. Our climate is wet enough that if I were to spray against wood walls, they just won't dry until July or August. My biggest maintaince headache is washing the algee off the outside of the buildings. My car is parked right now while I decide whether to fix it or replace it. One month and I found it's already molding inside. I'll have to get it into a barn and get heat into it soon or it won't be worth salvaging.

jcaron2,
In case you are in need of stall doors this is where I got mine 20 some years ago. Very, very well made, perfect and true. Good pricing also.

Cross Buck Bottom/Grill Top Door [R-48] - $275.00 : Horse Stalls by Woodstar Products, Quality Horse Stalls and Barn Related Accessories Manufacturer Since 1977

Thanks. Woodstar's got a lot of nice stuff, and that's where I plan to buy doors if I decide to go that route. At this point, however, I'm strongly leaning toward building them myself, especially since I'll be doing 8' doors, instead of the standard 7'. I might still get the slider hardware from them though.

Everyone please keep the information/suggestions/critiques coming! I really appreciate it.

This is the idea I am going to work with for my stalls, but I will be making my own. http://www.behlencountry.com/products/galvanized_horse_stalls
My plan is to have the entire 12ft section hinged to open for tractor access and the slide door for regular access.
