I've been searching through the posts and it seems I need to remove this wire to get the cap off the cylinder. How the heck do I do that?!?!? It is really in there good. Any hints or tips on how to do this?

Hard to tell from the picture but if it's like the ones on some of my cylinders one side will have a tab sticking up to keep it from rotating all the way around. The other side is the side you use something to tap it into the cylinder so the whole wire rotates around the tube internally. It won't take much and the other end of it will start to come further out. the further you can tap it around the more that will come out until you can grab it with visegrips or channellocks and finish pulling it out.

Yours may be different but I'm guessing all are the same design. Be careful pulling it and don't twist or pry too hard because if you break it off then you have to have something flexible to finish tapping that wire out of it's groove to release the head.

Good luck

Looks like there's a problem with the wire. Lock the cylinder in a pipe vise. If a pipe vise isn't available, try to put it in a vise so that you can lock it down tight and not damage the tube. You need to turn the cap. You might break the wire, but you can get another one. Stick something like a small pick down there and coax the wire out as you turn the cap. It may be a pain, but it will come out. It's a little difficult to tell, but you may have to turn the cap and break off the piece sticking out.
Good luck

Dang AKKAMAAN, where the heck do you get all these neat drawings? Old ornery people might not like this new stuff, but that illustrates it better then I can say it!

Okay, I was just checking out your library. I didn't think the "18 wheel dump truck" would be anything like what it was. That is crazy!!!

Oh...but it was Hydraulic related...had a discussion about waisting energy on dumping chip loads

Does the driver stay in the truck? What a ride!

Excellent drawing, AKKA!

This comes up again and again....now we can just link to your image.

I have only done a few of this type myself, and I suspect this method is
chosen only to save money (no threading).

I would bet that the end of the cyl has 2 holes for a spanner wrench. Just turn the end cap and the wire will spin out. That is the way you have to take the cyl's apart on my Terramite

I bookmarked your site AK, I hope you don't mind it I link to it? Some of those pictures sure save a lot of typing (pecking in my case!)

I am inclined to agree with Nat. Just twist the top in a clockwise direction, and the pin should self feed out of the cylinder, unless the lip is broken on the pin.

Thats ok with me....I am just looking for a software that can preview the files automatically...that would make it easier to manage...
If I would like to have it "secret", I would have it lock behind a password....LOL

You know I got tired of uploading to forums so this is much easier...not warranty though...hahaha

Lay the cyl on your shop table, fixture the capped side clevis in a vise, turn the nut with a pipe wrench or a chain wrench, usually the nut turns real easy....

Thanks guys. The only problem is there is nothing for me to grab onto to spin the cap. No holes for a spanner wrench and no flats to grab with a wrench.

You might have to help the ring out to get it started....use a firm narrow tool....stick it in under the ring and bend the ring out a little while turning the cap...

If you brake the "hook" on the inside end of the ring.... it can get hard to get it out....then the cap will spin around without feeding the ring out....

Did one just like that last week at work. No wrench needed.

Small pick to pull the bent end outa the slot and twisted the cap by hand.

Piece-O-cake.
