Here is a cheap and easy way to fend of dogs or a person...get you some fresh really hot peppers at the grocery store...buy a bagful and boil them in vinegar long enough for them to get real soft..let the liquid cool..put it all in a food processor and liquify it then strain it and the liquid that remains should be put into any small empty spray bottle you have..if you do not have one -Wal Mart sells empty small spray bottles..fill the a spray bottle with the liquid and just squirt that on any dog or person ..right into thier eyes..If you don't bleieve it works just try a squirt on yourself...It will be at least an hour before the pain is gone.

This is timely. I was just walking my dog at the local park and here come two dogs, off leash, growling and heading right for us. Owners are yelling and dogs are oblivious. When they got about 5 feet away I nailed one then the other with Halt. Of course that was when the shouting started about what a terrible person I am and how harmless those dogs are. The dogs stopped in their tracks and did the face wiping thing, no one was injured.

Every trail entrance has the same sign - all dogs must be on a 6 foot leash. Everyone thinks they are the exception.:rolleyes:

My FIL used this method to make his own garden pest/bug repellent spray.

That sounds like good advice. The next time I feel threatened enough to start walking backwards away from dogs I will just start spraying.... If the wind is in my favor.

When I was a kid I used to help a buddy deliver papers. Their were a bunch of nasty dogs on the route. My buddy would look them stright in the eye, bare his teeth and growl loudly at them then make a threatening gesture, I never saw one that didn't back down.

Right, I keep an eye on which way the wind if blowing and also use a stream vs a mist spray.

And don't feel like you need to find a new route with no dogs. You don't need to get permission from anyone's dog to walk down a public street. The dogs learn quickly to leave you alone and you are doing everyone in the area a favor by standing up for your rights. The bullies here are the dog owners who get a vicarious kick out of seeing their dogs intimidate you.

The owners?? HA. It seams as thou they are mostly 30 year old 120 pound women or 60 year old disabled men. Neither one of which can control two 60 pound dogs. I have called the cops twice this summer and both times they knew who I was talking about. All the other times I have let the owners know that they are liable for the dogs action and then they get real interested in helping me get on my way.

dmccarty;
Thanks for the reminder about my breathing the mace. That is one of the reasons I walk everyday. 40 years of smoking has slowed me down but I am 5 months without smoking now and it is getting easier.
Congrats :
I've been off them for 32weeks now.
I Started when I was 19 & smoked for 50 years.

I had a lady (term used loosely) quietly turn her pit bull out on me when I was working on a water booster station outage in a snow storm and this dog runs right up to me and clamps down on my right foot and starts tightening the vise like jaws they are famous for. I thought about 2 seconds before taking a swing with the 24 inch steel pipe wrench square on top of the head and I mean it connected perfect and with 1 hit that dog was out cold. I went back to my business of the day and in about 5 minutes that dog woke up and I heard the lady (term used loosely again) open the garage door about 16 inches and let the dog back in(that is the same way she let it out). Needless to say she never let that dog out again when I was around and I was never without my Water Company issue 24 inch pipe wrench, it seemed like a good deal to me.

Where do these nuts come from? Do you ever get nervous just thinking about how many oddball people there really are?

There were 5 people and a dog sitting on the porch across the street from where I was walking. I heard one of them say "watch this" and the dog started to cross the street growling and raised hair on his back toward me and the people were giggling. But then they saw a car coming and it looked like it might hit the dog and everyone jumped off the porch and caught the dog before the car hit him.

And the state gave this family a permit for a day care center for kids in there house.
