Beer...avoiding skunk

Good beer does come in cans. You just have to buy them great big cans.

As for the taste the next day. Admittedly there is decline, but relatively speaking, nothing really tastes very good that day.

Well, I fixed your list :D

Ahh, Robert and Egon. Let me expand on the can subject.

There are two kinds of beer:

a) Slug bait. We put a little in the bottom of a shallow dish to attract and kill slugs.

b) Swillin brew. Generally inexpensive, in bottles and the sort of thing that goes down the hatch in giant gulps in hot weather. This is also what you serve certain types of guests. May be in the kegerator.

c) Savorin brew. This is the good stuff. Yes, usually in bottles, or keg(sometimes homebrew kegs). Consumed with a good meal, with close friends. Mmmm.

I generally have both in the fridge and consume about equal amounts.

Sorry for the digression.....:D

One of the best pics I have seen in my 10 or so years on TBN and its predesessor.

C02 is the way to go. Beer last a long time(if not consumed. Hiccup!).

Nice drink holder!

Robert, See you are from CA, ever tried Anchor Steam? Met a fella on course many years ago and he told me about it. I think that brewery is one of the oldest micro-breweries in the States? Prohibition finished most breweries.

:D:D

Thanks Robert. I stand corrected.

NOTE: Beer is more expensive in Canada than in the US. I remember last time I was down looking at a case of Bush and thinking, wow, how cheap can they go.

Slug bait! Ha ha ha

Anchor Steam is great with a bowl of steamed clams! A hunk of sourdough... Now I'm thirsty AND hungry!

We have a nice smaller brewery in Placerville; Placerville Brewing Company. They have a really nice Vanilla Stout.

I hate to admit this.....

But I have limited my beer consumption.

Its horrible.

I replace beer with something else...

I hate to admit it.

But I am now...

Drinking wine! :eek::rolleyes::eek:

The shame. ;)

I am loosing a pound a week! :D:D:D:D So I will continue my wine diet. Wine is ok but I rather have beer. :)

Bud, Coors, Busch, etc are just carbonated water. Might as well just drink from the tap. Course the tap water, aka spring water at my house, is mighty good with a bit of Bush, Black Bush that is. ;)

This fall we are headed to EPCOT at Disney World for the Food and Wine Festival. I will be walking around the world tasting BEER! and food from different countries! Woo Hoo! :D:D:D

Sam Adams will be there and I like him very much!

Later,
Dan

Drop by if you ever make it out west. We have about 80 wineries within a little over an hour. There are 7 or eight within 10 minutes.

That's not counting the 1.5 hour drive to Napa/Sonoma.

Our El Dorado/Amador wines are great!

I've been working in the US quite a bit this year and I have become quite fond of that brand. :) Hyde Park Brewery also has some nice brews to sample on jam night.

Thanks for the invite! I have heard the wine tours out that way are very nice.

Before Prohibition NC was the largest wine producer east of the Mississippi. Wine is returning. There are a couple wineries in my area and far more up in the mountains. I have been watching a guy do a lot of work and spend a bunch of money on plantings. At first I thought he was putting in a orchard but it looks like grapes. In 5-10 years his land will be in the city. :( He really has spent some money and is not finished yet.

Wine is ok. I found a wine I like and the wifey will sip. It is a Chablis. And it comes in a box!:eek::rolleyes::D:D You have to give the box credit since the wine does not go skunky. :D

I much prefer beer. :D

US Beer has gotten so much better over the last couple of decades. Our little town even has a very good micro brewery. The problem is they only sell in growlers and kegs. I can't nor should I drink a whole growler in one day. :D And the wifey gives me that look if I mention that I would like a keg fridge. :D

I just read that some US beer makers are looking at putting beer in a box.

Then which will be better? Keg, bottle, can or BOX? :D:D:D

At EPCOT's Food and Wine festival I have heard that one can get Sam Adam's Utopia beer. I am not sure if it will be available unless one goes to an extra cost event but I will be looking and asking. :D I REALLY want to try an Utopia. Its 27% alcohol! I have had some Belgian/Belgian style beers around 10-12%. VERY GOOD but VERY dangerous! :D

Too early in morning to be thinking about beer and rich food! :D:D:D The dried banana chips I just had with breakfast just ain't working.....:)

Hiya,

If I could add a couple comments on the shelf life of various brews

Wheat and fruit infused brews have the shortest shelf life I have found

Pale ales and India Pale Ales have some of the longest shelf life. In particular IPA's were designed to remain fresh on the ships voyage from England to India in the hot summer months. They add hopps and it's acidity keeps bad stuff from growing in it.

Dogfishhead 120 minute IPA has the longest shelf life of any beer comercially produced, it also has the highest level of hopps in any beer.

And fianlly, the "skunky" smell is referred to as "brused" in the brewing trade. The primary cause is light damage caused by clear or green bottles. The reason Hieniken always tastes brused is that it shipps in green bottles and is displayed openly in stores and coolers. Pick up one of the mini kegs of it and taste what it should taste like.

OK, where did I leave my beer?

IPAs are my favorites. A brewpub without a good IPA is a waste of space! Our local Brewpub has Ed's IPA, named after a deceased client, who probably needed very little embalming fluid It is usually quite bitter, but I hear lately it is slightly less so due to a shortage of hops. Anyone heard of a hop crop failure?

For a site that has trouble with motor oil and weather discussions, we certainly do spread the love when conversation turns to beer. :)
Just a little off topic observation.... Back to beer talk now.

OK. I will cause us to have trouble with Beer Talk.:D

I can't stand IPA beers! :D:D:D:D

Well that is a bit strong. :) The bitterness is ok but I get headaches from some of the IPAs. And NO I did not drink too much of it at one time. :D:D:D:D

To put this on the correct track. Drinking IPA beer is like using Dino Oil in your tractor!:D:D:D:D There. That shall stir the pot! :D:D:D

In answer to questions, I have 2 cases left, both cans. Coors light, Mich Ultra
.
Given the beer the OP has and quantity -- not sure it would ever go skunky and even if it did, could you tell the difference???:rolleyes::rolleyes:
--- life is to short to drink poor quality beer:eek:

I guess you just haven't had a good one then :D :D, IPA's are higher in alcohol content thus the quick headache. I think they have a vibrant taste, best one I've had so far has to be from a brew pub in Phila, just outside of the Market East Train station.

Ask some of my friends in the UK and they'll tell you all those American brews that some one decided to call beer, are just watered down Lagers. Bah! Give me a Yuenglings any day. :D :D

Hmmm, now I'm thirsty. Well, its 5 o'clock in the UK. :D
