After I disc up a food plot, the ground is of course fairly irregular. I made a drag harrow out of 3 pieces of heavy angle iron linked together with chain and then drag it around, and this works pretty good. My question is do any of you guys attach a drag harrow to the back of the disc harrow to do this in one operation? I have heard of people doing this and just wondered if it is practical, to save time and laps around the plot. If so, is there any way to lift it with the disc, or does it just drag. A problem I may have is turning it around. Just curious if there is a better was to do this. I have often wondered if a good pulverizer or cultipacker would help. Of course this would have to be used independently as a separate step.

I made a drag out of old truck tires. I chain them together and just drag them behind the disc. Keep them about six feet behind the disc.

Any trouble turning around? a lot of my plots are long and narrow and I am afraid that turning would be an issue. After using your tire drag, are you ready to plant. in other words, do you do anything else before broadcasting seed?

Turns are a bit wider with the tire drag attached. Just slow down. I just toss the seed out afterwards and pray for rain. Food plots always came up well.

my neigbor has a 8" diameter log attached behind his 7' disc for crushing and leveling the dirt. does not compromise turning radius.

After I used my neighbors disc to turn the soil over I chained a couple of pallets to the tractor and then dragged them over the field a couple of times to break up the clumps and flatten things out. Drag the pallets upside down and you will get a nice smooth surface. I then used a spike harrow at a medium setting to get some nice grooves for the seed to go into. After I broadcast the seed I then used a piece of chain link fence attached to a 4x4 and dragged that over the seeds. It worked well and everything came up fine. I hope this helps.

I made this one so I could lift it so turning and transporting it wouldn't be an issue.

Here's a place or two I've smoothed up with it

I'd like to get this one rigged up so I can lift it and carry it with my 3 point hitch.

Two issue with that. One, that's not attached behind a disk.
Two: pull something like that behind fluffy, disked soil and it's just going to plow into the dirt.
Most things pulled behind a disk are going to drag and not be something that can be lifted. It just takes a larger turning radius (assuming you're using a 3 pt disk), though that isn't always easy. A cultipacker may help a little, but it doesn't help much as far as leveling.

Haven't had either issue
1* & 2* Have used it several times and never ran into either issue.

Sorry LB , But no wonder youve never ran into an issue.

#1 Its a Really small pallet with concrete blocks on it for weight .

#2 Its pulled behind a little bitty tractor .

#3 It has nothing to do with the OP question of dragging behind a disk .

#4 I would think a hand rake would do the job much better in your situation . .

I'd look to be levelling WHILE discing as opposed to AFTER discing. That said, I alway pull an old fashioned spike tooth harrow behind the disc, OR, in the case of my 12' wheel disc, a section of railroad rail attached at each end with a heavy piece of chain. On that 12' disc, I use a rail that's about 14' long. (Just a bit wider than the disc.) Under harsh conditions, or while at a decent speed, a wooden pallet would break into a zillion little pieces. Just not practical for use on a large scale or for hard use......

Cultipackers were mentioned. They're best used AFTER the soil is relatively smooth. They don't do so much to level as the do to firm an already level seedbed.

I mounted a small harrow behind my disk and it works very well.

You da man deere755! What a great idea. No permanent modification of the disc frame, it would lift and would not interfer with backing up, and it is just what I was looking for. Cheap too, which is icing on the cake. My tractor is much larger, so I can envision using a single piece of railroad rail or something similar to really smooth out things. Your attachment design is what I was lacking. Pretty cool. I forsee a trip to the steel salvage yard to collect parts. You could also flip it up and have it attached to the top of the disc to add weight. Thanks for a clever idea.

Glad I could help out. If I was to do it all over again I would have made it so it was 2 foot bigger then the disk so I could have a foot sticking out on each side instead of the 6 inches I made it. Second I would made a 3 bar harrow instead of the 2 bar. I have all the stuff to make it a 3 bar but I just have not done it yet.
