JD 970 Power Beyond Plumbing...want to add valve for flail mower side slide cylinder

The specs say 8.7 gallons per minute of flow. I don't know how many 'spools' I need. Does that have anything to do with how many directions or cylinders are being controlled?

One "spool" operates one DA (dual acting) cylinder, like your FEL valve is a two spool valve. I should have asked "How many cylinders will you be needing to operate at once?"

In the case of the FEL there are cylinders on each side so wouldn't one spool be working two cylinders at a time for the raise and lower and two for the curl/dump? I suppose a two spool valve, like my FEL has would be handy in case I wanted to add a cylinder to the three point for the box scraper or blade. The forward and back could be used for raise and lower and the left and right for the flail shift cylinder. I would guess that is a pretty spendy valve however and a two spool valve with two handles would be much less expensi ve. Any other important tips on valves other than open center with at least 1/2" ports?

Those cylinders are in "parallel", so the valve see's them as one cylinder.

Here are two valves I would recommend for you:

Joystick Valve

Two Handled Valve

So for $50 you can get the joystick if you want it. The main thing is to meet or exceed the GPM requirement for your machine...so a 10 GPM rated valve is a good fit.

I ordered the Joystick Valve and should have it tomorrow. Next task will be picking a mounting location then finding the hoses and fittings...hopefully I can find them locally. 1/4" hoses will probably suffice for what I will be using for cylinder(s) in the rear with 1/2" lines for the 'In' & 'Out' to the valve.

I got the valve and have selected a location for mounting. Now connecting to the Power Beyond...the Inlet to the valve from the Power Beyond is pretty obvious but I end up with two return lines so which one do I connect to the outlet or return on my joystick? Do I use the 3/8" male quick connect that was removed from the supply quick connect or the pipe plumbed 1/2" male quick connect into the rockshaft? Hopefully this makes sense to anyone that has seen a Power Beyond on a JD970. Do they use both 3/8" and 1/2" quick connects so it cant be connected wrong or does the return need to be 1/2"? Without going and looking I believe they are both 1/2" hoses.

I assume that like with the BH I would use the 1/2" male quick connect at the rocker shaft for the return and just leave the 3/8" male quick connect unconnected?

After further looking I dont see why I can't just use the 3/8" male quick connect (removed from the PB 3/8" FM quick connect) for the return and just use the 1/2" male quick connect for the Backhoe return, it appears that they both end up in the same place. Am I wrong or correct?

I am getting confused...why do you have 2 return lines? Can you post a picture?

Here are some pictures...maybe one of them is not a return line?

2nd picture shows the 1/2" quick connect that the hose from BH connects to, only used with the BH otherwise it has a dust cap on it. The other pictures show the 'loop' hose...the FM 3/8" QC on the left connects to the BH, the Male 3/8" QC that is left doesn't hook to anything with the BH connected. 4th picture shows 3/8" QC disconnected and ready for BH>

OK, pictures worth a thousand words:D

You do NOT need the other return for the backhoe-it bypasses the 3PH so it's inactive when the BH is mounted.

You only need to plumb the new valve between the "loop" hose and 3/8" QD's.

Ok sounds good. So as long as a person continued to use 'Open Center' type valves you could add more into this same loop right? That could come in handy if I wanted to put a hydraulic cylinder on the backhoe thumb someday.
