Going to pick up my B2920 out of state tomorrow my buddy thinks it that its illegal to use 3" heavy duty straps and that I must use chains? I do not want to scratch my new machine. Has anybody heard this before? Thanks

I think chains, and a specific grade here in Washington.

YEAH;
There are post plastered all over TBN about it.
Do a search.

I believe the laws vary by state, and what I hear most often is that chains in the back of the load are a minimum requirement, but hopefully you can find the official answer somewhere on your state's website.

But, wait, you don't want to scratch your tractor? What is this, a trailer queen? ;)

Let me quote what i heard on TBN here. "a cargo that weighs less then 10,000lbs that is secured in front and secured in rear" . This says they dont care if it straps or chains and this is coming from a law enforcement officer.
Now as I understand it today, DOT wants you to have your cargo secured on all four corners and each implement have thier own tiedown (ie backhoe, FEL, bushhog, etc) I prefer to use grade 70 chains and binders on anything over 1k lbs. If you dont have grade 70, I say grade 50 would do in a pinch along with straps if you have nothing else. Its better then just straps with over 4k lbs machine!

Not sure about the legal part but I use chains to put my conscience at ease.

Here we go again..:D

Unless you are commercial, or you load is rolling around you'll be fine with straps....

It is a good point that is raised that in spite of what might be legal, there is the peace of mind aspect that'd come with using chains. There'd be nothing worse than having your head trapped between an airbag and a front end loader that came up through your truck.

Chains are no better than properly rated straps

Other than straps are notorious for being torn at the worst time. Chains are more durable than straps, hold up much better in a accident and are not cut or frayed by the smallest of sharp edges.

Been there, done that. You can do the search. On a straight stretch of highway I had 2 straps with "10,000 rating" all over them snap like they were made of twine when hauling a tractor that wasn't a whole lot heavier. If it's worth spending the money to buy it and haul it home, it's darn well worth the money to NOT use straps that most likely will not have the WLL you think. IMHO, hauling with straps when you haven't been told any different is just a bad mistake. Hauling with straps when you have been told better; now that's just plain stupid!

I use 4 14,000 pound rated 3" straps when trailering my B21. I have not had any problems in around 500 miles of trailering.

I thought it would simply be common sense.
- Chains don't degrade in the sun
- Chains don't fray
- Chains don't shred with grit and dirt
- Chains are not likely to break when over any edge
- Chains last 100 times longer
- Chains are required in many states for loads that can roll
- Chains are clearly rated by their WLL whereas straps post breaking strength causing most people to use far, far inferior strength straps.
- etc. etc. etc.

I wouldn't haul my machine without chains and binders period! Lots of stories out there about straps failing, very few about chains & binders failing.

I have used both chains and straps and yes on a small load like the b yes properly rated straps like the one talked about 2" or 3" 10,000 straps on each corner will be legal in IL, Chains will last longer but in IL it is legal to tie down cars on a wrecker/car transport with straps on all for corners. Ie 4 straps not 2 that goes threw the frame back down 4 seperate straps. Best of of luck and saftey is no accident a couple of extra straps $20 each are cheap insurance on any load.
