King Cutter middle buster

Got one today, in order to save wear and tear on the new KK tiller.
Wow! pulled it around my garden spot, it had a good start on the tilling, but that middle buster brought lots of clods up, and much deeper than the tiller can reach. The garden spot looks like **** now, will groom it up with the tiller in a few days

Any tips on how to use it "properly"

Ironically, the middle buster was 10 dollars cheaper than the Sub-soiler. The farm store manager told me to buy the middlebuster then buy bit for the subsoiler. Have both tools for 10 dollars more.

I did what you store manager suggested. Also, I needed the shorter middlbuster frame for my small tractor.

I looked them over and measured and fretted etc etc and went with the Middlebuster. I made the Subsoiler point for it rather than $$ buy one. I also welded a bracket on the vertical bar for more weight, but have never used it. It's pretty heavy as it is. I have not had any trouble with either blade being too close to the ground in transport.

Use the middlebuster or the subsoiler in the fall. Working the soil in the fall that deep will open up the soil and help store more moister, thats good. I would lean toward the subsoiler for fall use than the middlebuster. The subsoiler will probably work a little deeper and will leave less furrow. Middlebusters leave a big furrow and clods like you describe and make it more time consuming to get the area level for a nice garden.

I agree with Spruce... I picked up the same KK middle buster a year and a half ago or so. In fall 2007, I ripped up our garden spot first in-line with the rows, then went over it again at an angle to tear up the ridges between the first passes. Left it rough like that all winter. Had grass clippings, corn husks from the neighbor's field, and leaves catch in the grooves and break down under the snow all winter. Then come spring, I use the tiller on it (just a walk-behind, haven't been able to justify the $ for a 3-point one yet) and made an awesome seedbed.

I also plan to use it some where I am digging out a pad for my new shop, to help loosen up the dirt to make digging it out with the loader easier.

well, I had no problem leveling the garden spot with the 6' KK tiller- looks great. Expecting some more rain this week

The sub-soiler is a GREAT versatile tool. I can see loads of uses for it in the future.
