Cat D3, Deere 110 TLB, Kubota BX23 and L3800 and RTV900 with restored 1948 Deere M, 1949 Farmall Cub, 1953 Ford Jubliee and 1957 Ford 740 Row Crop, Craftsman Mower, Deere 350C Dozer 50 assorted vehicles from 1905 to 2006
In today's mail I received letters for 2 of the trucks I own... here's how the letter started:

"Since the registration on your model year 1930 vehicle is expiring soon, please consider an alternative to driving this vehicle. You can receive $650 for your 1987 or older car, van or truck from the the Air District and help reduce air pollution.

The Air District program buys and scraps 1987 and older vehicles...

We hope that you will take advantage of this incentive to retire your vehicle and help improve air quality..."

One letter is for my 1930 Model A Ford Truck and the other for my 1985 Chevy Truck...

$650 is 25% more than my Model A cost new!

I'm surprised the Air District has money to fund the program in these difficult times...

I saw an analysis years ago that said if we really wanted to improve air quality we should take the older vehicles off the road. It would be cheaper to buy out older cars than paying lots of money on new cars to get incremental increases in pollution control.

The article was years ago so I can't remember the numbers but the amount of air pollution is miniscule in new cars but the older cars produce huge amounts of pollutants in comparison.

But $650 for a 1985 truck does not buy much of a new truck. :D Might buy four new tires and a tank or two of fuel. :D:D:D

Later,
Dan

Sounds like Washington doesn't pay nearly as much as Texas.:D Since I don't qualify (fortunately) for any of the state money, I haven't kept up with the program, but the last I heard, they were running out of money for the purpose. I think this car dealer's website more clearly describes the AirCheck Texas program than the state's websites.

The San Francisco Bay Area Air Quality Management District administers this program...

In the last 10 years of paying license and insurance I've driven about 500 miles total... most of that is from yearly Veterans Day Parade, Fourth of July Parade and the Annual Rodeo Parade...

I'm surprised that the letter didn't also say that "Driving your 1987 or older vehicle is known to cause cancer in the state of California"!

Maybe they could buy back private jets as well? I mean while the government is printing all this new money anyway! Maybe catalytic converters for cow and other farm animals too. Maybe we can ban Air Conditioning for anything other than government buildings and outlaw the use of fossil fuels and wood to heat our homes. Boy I better call my senator and congressman before I forget these great ideas!

It is coming, don't worry, the government is working overtime. AFAIK burning wood is now illegal in People's Republic of California.

I don't see anything wrong with posting a notice of programs that exist, but we need to be careful and remember that politics is a prohibited topic on Tractorbynet.

I apologize if this became political, I just enjoy older Trucks, cars, and the like. Especially old military vehicles. To me it's a shame to see these vehicles crushed as I believe they are an important part of our history. I think that these vehicles will slowly disappear on their own and don't believe the government should be paying money to speed up their demise, but it doesn't suprise me.

Don't let them have the model a. I'll give you a $1000 for it.

Have you considered removing inflammatory posts? Some of my posts that I thought were factual and non political were taken down recently.

So long as participation is voluntary and they won't pay over $650, it seems to me that any vehicle that someone treasures will be safe.

I sure wish I could have kept the classics I owned when I was a teenager. 36 Ford coupe, no dents but mechanically loose, cost $50. 36 Chev 2 dr sedan, $35. 37 Chev coupe, maybe several hundred dollars after I got it running with a Chev V8 in it. 41 Chev coupe $75. 31 Chrysler Imperial 8 limousine expertly modified with a Dodge pickup bed that looked like the factory built it that way. $100. And several early 50's cars under $100. For example 50 Olds V8 sedan, the same model as a Highway Patrol car. (two of them; one that was my primary car for three years.)

I didn't have the money to own two cars at once and couldn't convince my parents that these classics would appreciate. I chose college instead of a career in automechanics like most of my friends so I was broke all the time at that point in my life, but I still regret very much selling each of them.

That is one sweet looking Ford Ultra!:D Can you believe that the Air Board would feed it into the crusher/shredder?

xlr82v2, why did it occur to you to say that?

Why?

Well, you can't hardly buy anything these days that doesn't have a warning about it causing cancer in the state of California... for example, the Christmas lights we bought last year... or the new hammer I bought, steel head, wood handle... both had a warning tag or sticker on them saying that this product was known to cause cancer in the state of California...!!! Christmas lights! a Hammer! I guess they tested OK in every other state, though. At least, no warnings about them causing cancer in Illinois.

I just figured if they really wanted that vehicle off the road, they'd warn about it causing cancer, trying to shame you into turning it in. After all, think of all carcinogens that old engine must be pumping into the environment! Who wants to give a little kid cancer from driving it in California? At least move it over to Nevada or Oregon where the cancer risk drops significantly ;)

This just highlights that we have different issues out here. Unfortunately, most are central to a couple small areas. Those small area's have the population, that gets the votes, that makes the rest of the state deal with it too.

The US is a huge country. Issues in some states are totally different from issues in other states. Even from county to county. Riverside county in southern Ca is bigger than most states in the eastern US.

Not that I like it either. I wish some of the issues in this state would remain in their respective counties. Not so lucky about that.

Why?

Prokop, why did you say that? Did you learn it from Rush Limbaugh?

Comparing my experience with the current situation - America is pretty close to socialism - and as always it starts in CA. Come on, to ban wood burning?? What's next? Love/hate sessions?
