Tractor
Cat D3, Deere 110 TLB, Kubota BX23 and L3800 and RTV900 with restored 1948 Deere M, 1949 Farmall Cub, 1953 Ford Jubliee and 1957 Ford 740 Row Crop, Craftsman Mower, Deere 350C Dozer 50 assorted vehicles from 1905 to 2006
In today's mail I received letters for 2 of the trucks I own... here's how the letter started:

"Since the registration on your model year 1930 vehicle is expiring soon, please consider an alternative to driving this vehicle. You can receive $650 for your 1987 or older car, van or truck from the the Air District and help reduce air pollution.

The Air District program buys and scraps 1987 and older vehicles...

We hope that you will take advantage of this incentive to retire your vehicle and help improve air quality..."

One letter is for my 1930 Model A Ford Truck and the other for my 1985 Chevy Truck...

$650 is 25% more than my Model A cost new!

I'm surprised the Air District has money to fund the program in these difficult times...

I saw an analysis years ago that said if we really wanted to improve air quality we should take the older vehicles off the road. It would be cheaper to buy out older cars than paying lots of money on new cars to get incremental increases in pollution control.

The article was years ago so I can't remember the numbers but the amount of air pollution is miniscule in new cars but the older cars produce huge amounts of pollutants in comparison.

But $650 for a 1985 truck does not buy much of a new truck. :D Might buy four new tires and a tank or two of fuel. :D:D:D

Later,
Dan

Sounds like Washington doesn't pay nearly as much as Texas.:D Since I don't qualify (fortunately) for any of the state money, I haven't kept up with the program, but the last I heard, they were running out of money for the purpose. I think this car dealer's website more clearly describes the AirCheck Texas program than the state's websites.

The San Francisco Bay Area Air Quality Management District administers this program...

In the last 10 years of paying license and insurance I've driven about 500 miles total... most of that is from yearly Veterans Day Parade, Fourth of July Parade and the Annual Rodeo Parade...

I'm surprised that the letter didn't also say that "Driving your 1987 or older vehicle is known to cause cancer in the state of California"!

Maybe they could buy back private jets as well? I mean while the government is printing all this new money anyway! Maybe catalytic converters for cow and other farm animals too. Maybe we can ban Air Conditioning for anything other than government buildings and outlaw the use of fossil fuels and wood to heat our homes. Boy I better call my senator and congressman before I forget these great ideas!

It is coming, don't worry, the government is working overtime. AFAIK burning wood is now illegal in People's Republic of California.

I don't see anything wrong with posting a notice of programs that exist, but we need to be careful and remember that politics is a prohibited topic on Tractorbynet.

I apologize if this became political, I just enjoy older Trucks, cars, and the like. Especially old military vehicles. To me it's a shame to see these vehicles crushed as I believe they are an important part of our history. I think that these vehicles will slowly disappear on their own and don't believe the government should be paying money to speed up their demise, but it doesn't suprise me.

Don't let them have the model a. I'll give you a $1000 for it.
