Hey everybody, glad to find ya'll. I grew up on a farm but moved away, so I have forgotten an awful lot in 20 years. I'll be around asking questions in the coming months as I put together a JD 71 planter. Here's what I'm starting with:

I've been studying the photo you emailed me, as well as the ones you posted. What you have there is #71's mounted on some sort of coulter cart. It's definately not something directly from Deere, and I'd suspect it's a very well made "one of a kind". From appearances, it uses the coulters for sort of a "strip till" planting (as opposed to true no till) Looks like a LOT of iron for anything short of a BIG tractor.

The good news is, the planter units look to be the last generation of #71's from Deere. Earlier models used a 2-1/2" X 2-1/2" "diamond" toolbar as opposed to the 3" x 6" or 4" X 6" style you have there.

Welcome memfuzz,

We are also in the middle of rebuilding some 71 planters to make a three row planter. Good luck and keep us up on your progress.

FWJ, while I'm gathering parts do I need to switch styles of the press wheel?
Thumper&Buttercup, I think you have a lot more parts there in your part of the country. Memphis and the Mid South have been picked over already when it comes to 71 parts. Thank goodness for the internet!

Hey Memfuzz,

If you can find them I would get this kind of wheel. In your picture they look like the wheels they use with beet seed up here. For Corn and Soybeans you want a flat wheel not one that will push the seed further down.

Unless you're after record yields, I wouldn't bother with swapping press wheels. Odds are you won't be able to see the difference when all is said and done.
