Wouldn't you still need insurance and license on the car in case it came off the trailer some how?

You don't need a license on your load of sheet metal or pipes in case they come off the trailer.

My insurance extends liability coverage to my trailer when it's pulled by my insured vehicle...

My understanding is an inoperable vehicle being trailered is no different then hauling anything else.

I do not have coverage if I were to use my trailer for hire under my current plan...

in Kentucky...........

and South Carolina. Most trailers pulled by any size pickup have no tags. Get into the big rigs and yes they have tags.

A car on a trailer is just a piece of cargo. The insurance is covered by the towing vehicle. No different than carrying a big pile of rock. The rock doesn't need to be insured but if it falls off and hits a car you're liable and the insurannce on the tow vehicle is on the hook. (as well as you for an insecure load).

Thats the way it works here in Indiana also. As for anything happening to the trailer while its not in tow my homeowners policy covers it.

What if you don't have the assets to self insure?

Then you take your chances like everywhere else people run without insurance. It only becomes an issue if you have an at fault accident, then you can loose your license until damages are paid. And if you never pay then you drive without a license until the next time you're caught. NH sees "mandatory everything " a little differently than our neighbors ME. VT. & Taxachusetts. A quick search will bring up multiple articles that say 47 states have mandatory insurance but have 12-15% uninsured vehicles. The NH towing association members have a big problem with uninsured wrecked and abandoned vehicles from out of state. Takes months to get rid of them yet towing laws require safe storage until they are claimed. MikeD74T
