Kubota BX24
I currently have a Kubota BX24 TLB and a tiller.I am open to purchasing other attachments as needed.

I will be starting a part time business with this tractor with me operating this spring.

I am insured!

MY QUESTION

How would you guys and gals go about marketing this small part time business?

How can I make people aware of what the BX24 can do, and how much MONEY, TIME, and LABOR I can save them?

We know what the BX24 can do, but I'm not sure that the masses know how useful and versatile this machine can be and what it is capable of doing for them.

Hope I made myself clear.

Thankyou

I have thought of the same thing as I am now unemployed. The market here where I live is tough. The only thing i can think of is market yourself for the smaller jobs in smaller spaces then the larger TLB can do. There are some homewoners who are picky about there lawns and The BX has a smaller footprint and lighter. Same goes for the areas where a gated area is small and BX can squeeze by under 48 inches. How many TLB's can do that and the larger ones say they needd to remove the fence. BX's wouldnt need to.

Some homeowners may want to start a garden and you can do it quickly with a 3pt tiller for them in a path smaller then 48 inches. this is good for small plots and you have power to go bigger , lets say an acre with no problem. The possibilites is endless, you just need to be able to market yourself doing this.

Just my 2 cents.

1. If you were interested in such services, where would you look?
2. Where do folks just browse to find local "stuff"?

For us, it's the bulletin board at the local supermarket. And there's a little weekly newspaper with a relatively small distribution to only the closest zip codes - maybe 6,000 residents. Insert a little ad with a "think spring". Make a small listing (bullets, not paragraph form) of what you can do. Phrase like "instead of thinking about it, see how fast we can get it done".
Good luck!

I would make up some business cards and put them on bulletin boards at other business's. Hand extra ones out to friends so they could pass them around to anybody who is interested. Word of mouth is the best advertisement. Good Luck on your new business.

I see a guy in my local craigslist that has a walk behind brush cutter and posts all the time about clearing property especially small overgrown areas.

depending on how popular your local CL is I would use that as a research tool.

I have also thought about doing something specializing in tilling. between a bx and a tiller, and a smaller walk behind for tight spaces, you could do a small vegi garden or redo someones whole lawn.

start with a specialty, and branch out on that

Insurance is for this business and does cover operating off my property.

I have a tow vehicle and trailer these are covered to.

No debt on any of the above, so I can offer good rates and still make out.

What to you is a good rate?

Around my area all the country stores have a bulletin board where you can post your business cards or info about your business. Course most locals, if they don't have the equipment or know who to use, ask the store owner for their recommendations. Many summer people just look in the phone book, check the bulletin board or ask their neighbors.
Good luck.

2*I have a tow vehicle and trailer these are covered to.
1*My insurance is only good while on my own property.
I have 3 tractors so that makes the insurance situation a little sticky.
2*What is the tow veh. and what's the trailer like?
This is an advantage you have over me.
All I have is an import pick up and a 6x8 foot trailer.

One idea may be to print up some flyers and put them on mailboxes of homes that you think may need the services you have to offer. For instance, if you drive by a home that has a garden then pop a flyer in their mailbox describing your tilling services (and you could even give them a price estimate on the flyer since you can see what you are working with).

Realtors may be an outlet as well - same concept as above - if you drive by a house for sale that needs the lawn mowed or downspout drains installed or a ditch cleaned out then contact the realtor and try to work something out.

Craigslist would be another good place to put an ad - maybe include a picture or two of your setup with a list of services you offer.

Good luck!

As we all know word of mouth is your best advertising but to get started I would target small Shopper magazines that come out weekly and also the local newspapers that most folks read. Small but attractive ads that tell people why you are unique and why they need your services.

Well have you put the BX24 to work on any for hire jobs yet?

Yes, 2 snowplowing jobs, we have had a ton of snow here.

I believe about 100+ inches since the begining of December.

Other wise the ground is pretty much frozen solid till about the begining of April most years.

Hi there,
I started my business with a BX23 here in Massachusetts and quickly found out that to be really legit involved quite a few hoops. First I had to obtain business liability insurance. this was rather difficult due to the potential damage (liability) that a tractor can cause. I take it you have accomplished this. When I did get insurance I was told specifically to not do commercial plowing. Next I got inland marine coverage to cover the tractor and trailer when in transit. Normal auto insurance won't cover the tractor and trailer. Next I needed to switch my truck registration and insurance to commercial. This was basically just more expense. Then on a commercial vehicle I had to have my business name printed, so I had the truck and trailer lettered for $900. Finally, in order to use the tractor commercially I had to get a Hoisting Engineer License from the state. This involved studying and passing an exam and then paying to keep it current. My license only covers my TLB, If I want to rent an excavator for a job I need a different license. Finally I had to register and get a permit from the town to operate a home business. I hope things are simpler where you live
