Hydrostat+FEL & BH don't mix??

I'm new here and have been posting in the buying forum as I'm looking to get my first tractor. Anyhow, a friend who has a New Holland 25 hydro calls me tonight and tells me he talked to one of his friends who "knows tractors" and this friend does not recommend a compact with hydro if your going to use a FEL and/or a BH. Claiming it will be to hard on the transmission. His suggestion was a shuttle shift.

First, enlighten me to exactly how a hydrostat tranny works.

As far as his claims go...... I was under the impression that the hydro was ideal, at least for FEL work.

It would take a mountain of evidence to convince me otherwise I think.

FWIW, I'm looking at the Kubota 2620 w/ FEL & BH.

I have an HST w/FEL and backhoe. It is the best tractor I've ever used. My wife figured it out in about 30 minutes too. I'll say this too; it's the safest tractor as well. Just let off the forward/reverse pedal and that tractor will hold it's position in all but the steepest spots. I can get about 2 or 3 times the amount of work done on my HST equipped tractor than on a shuttle-shift tractor.

BTW, get a grapple/thumb for the FEL. It will make it about 3 times more useful than not.

I am a lot more productive with Hydrostat. It avoid a lot of shifting, especially for loader work.

Don't ask those friends for any more tractor advice. Hydro is ideal for FEL work. Don't have a BH but don't see how that would be hard on the transmission.

I fact, come up here by SW Fort Wayne. You can play all you want with my B2620.. I have work you can do.

I did not like the hydro with the boomerang on my BX2200. My foot got tired. Not with this new one and if you are dragging dirt they even made it easier with the Cruise Control.

Tell the friend that "knows tractors" that there's a flag on the field, and its brown.

L5030 HSTC, 853FEL and Rhino 85 BH. The combination has been nothing short of excellent, and regarding his "hard on tranny" statement, it could not be further from the truth.

Does he really understand how a hydro operates?

L3430HST with woods 1009 FEL and woods 750 BH. My wife and I are very happy with it's ease of use and power. My tractor sees no garage and spends it's winters plowing snow in Northern Vermont in rather cold weather with no issues. I always warm it up, but I think that is wise for any equipment.

I suspect the new model HST is even better than mine.

The only thing I might have done different? Spend the money on the cab for the winter plowing.... Tranny, no regrets.

Friends don't have to know what they are talking about and can still be friends. You've got one. I've bought 6 Kubotas in 4 years and currently still have 3 of them. 3 of them had FEL's and all HST. Wouldn't consider anything but HST with FEL.

I can't imagine what the backhoe has to do with the transmission.
But I echo what everyone else says, for loader work you have to be a glutton for punishment to use anything but a hydro( I have done loader work with a geared transmission before). I don't know where they come up with this stuff.

Hey im new to the forum (just registered 2 minutes ago) on account of the fact that i just got a BX 2660 and after reading the thread and all the posts does anyone else think maybe that guy that told you that is jealous that youre getting a bota and doesnt want you to be happy , BTw this forum is awesome ive learned a ton about my new bota by reading threads and posts and also i considered a green tractor but im definately glad i got the orange one

My first tractor was a B6200 gear trans with FEL. Going from that to the B7610 HST was like night and day. The HST and power steering makes you way more productive. My 7610 has 250 hours on it now, lots of FEL work and quite a bit with the BH on it too, absolutely no issues with the transmission. If I buy another tractor, definitely HST. I should add, I have driven shuttle shift tractors and still prefer the HST.

I am not sure what exactly what he means by it will be too hard on the trann. My guess is that your friends friend is under the impression that the FEL and BH hydraulics run off the HST. The 3pt, FEL, BH all run off a seperate pump not off the HST, which is a seperate system. The only thing they share is the hydraulic oil. HST's are pretty simply actually. You have a variable displacement pump that has a swashplate (the variable part) that is connected to your drive pedal. When you push the pedal forward or rev. all you are doing is moving the swash plate one way or another, which starts pumping oil fwd or rev. This oil then goes to a fixed displacement "pump" or motor, which turns fwd or rev. So a HST is really only two hydraulic pumps connected together; a variable hydraulic pump hooked to a hydraulic motor. I have attached a picture that may or may not help. It is of my B7200, but I think it gives a good idea.

I agree with the general input from everyone else. HST is the only way to go for FEL work. I have the B2620 with FEL and BH, you will not be disappointed with the output of this machine. You will also love the HST, I can't stand to drive a machine that is geared after having it.

Some people might think that shifting is not that bad..... especially if they own one. My son-in-law has a gear tractor but he sure likes the HST I have.
I wouldn't think twice...HST!!!!! All these guys can't be wrong.
