Pull behind corn harvester

I'll get down my dads later this week to take a picture.

Corn is picked in Oct. when it dries out. We start cutting the outside edges by hand early when it is still green, but you can't give the cows to much per day as it can be bad for them.

This site has one that is similar but ours has a platform at the bin.

I think IH made pull behind combines longer than AC did but search for a AC 66 or 90 combine as they were good units.

These guys (S&S Equipment) on TractorHouse are actually located very close to me and they have a lot of pull-behind corn pickers. This one is the most expensive.

Both IH and Deere built pull type combines way up into the 70's, maybe on in to the 80's. Deere built a pull-type based on the 6620 and 7720 Titan self propelled. Not sure if they went on with them into the Titan II series or not.

John Deere built pull type combines up till 1995. The last model was the 9501.

Robert, I have ridden one of those sidehill combines during the wheat harvest over in eastern Washington. You can actually feel the combine slide sideways downhill on the wheat stubble as you move forward. Seems like it shifts 4"-8" and the driver just keeps compensating. Those guys, over there, actually put on special kits to allow the combine to tilt more than the factory models. They did mention to me that the older John Deere sidehills didn't have good enough brakes for that steep ground. My dad has a JD 6620 sidehill, but his fields aren't anything as steep as your photos. Great pictures.

That is a beast, wonder how much HP it requires?

How does all that terraced ground get irrigated? It seems that corn takes a fair amount of water.

Hi,
FYI. I do have a John Deere #18 single row picker available in lower Michigan. It should be field ready and had some new paint put on this past week. No sheller on these. I tried to get some decent information for you but keep comming up short. Ertl type models are on ebay. What I can say is that it uses rubber flails to strip the husks rather than steel scrapers. I'm in partners with it and think we would probably consider letting it go for $500. I actually need/want a picker with a sheller. Just missed a Gleaner 2 row wide combine. It had been sitting unused in a barn for the past 20 years only 1.5 miles from my field. It went to scrap a week ago for $800. Saw a 1 row New Idea/Agco picker(335? sorry - forget what number) sell for $940 today at auction.

Does anybody know if various models of New Idea pull-type corn-picker can be hooked up with the same sheller bed attachment, or if you have to match them by model?

Go over to the corn picker forum Corn picker forum . They can tell you all you need to know. I bought a New Idea 323 back in April and they have been a lot of help.

I farm in Minnesota. Raising corn could be _real_ different in Alabama, so.....

You don't want to pick 100 acres of corn with a 2 row pull behind picker. It will be a full time job, and I doubt you will be a full timer? I can do about 40 acres in 4-5 days in fall by myself, but I'm set up for it.

So, if you go big-time, you want a self propelled combine. This will give you wet corn tho, you need to dry it to 14.5% or less to store it. No cheating in a warm climate, you _need_ it dry. Up here it never dries to that on it's own, I don't know how it works in Alabama.

'Here' you can buy a 2 row picker for $300-800.

'parallel terraces' The point of a terrace is to follow the conture of the land, always be on the same level. Why are you worried about hills? There should be no hills with terraces. You follow along the crooked paths..... I don't understand.

Planting corn. Corn likes to all be planted at exactly the same depth, same distance apart in the row. A planter does this. A grain drill does _not_ do this. You can put corn in the ground with a grain drill, but you will not get a good corn yield from it. You need very accurate depth & spacing. Common row spacing is 30 inches. 40, 38, 36, 30, 22, 20, 15 are also possibilities, with 30 and 38 being most common.

ou really want your planter & picker or combine to 'match up' to each other. Most especially if you are farming terraces. A 4 row planter with a 2 or 4 row harvester. A 6 row planter with a 2, 3, or 6 row harvester. You don't want to have to straddle the 'guess row' with the harvester. For example, an 8 row planter and a 6 row combine - so often you would be going over the guess row.

If you are going to do 1-3 acres, well then do this any way you want. Just for fun. The drill works for that, etc. etc.

If you are going to plant 100 acres of corn, then you need to pay attention to what you are doing, fertilize, plant with a good planter, and so on. You will be talking real money on that amount of acres. You'll need to do it right, or lose your shirt.

Harvesting corn is always a problem. Getting it dried & stored can be a big $$$$$.
