I have ~~ 28 stumps that I want to get ground. They are all sizes, from 4" diameter to a couple of feet. Some are laid over from Katrina in 2005 with some of the rootball exposed.
Has anyone hired a stumpgrinder recently? Just curious. I know I won't get the $7 a pop price that I had 15 years ago for about twice that many stumps.

Thanks,

Jack

I recently had a bunch of them removed for what turned out to be just less than $5 per stump. The guy had a Bobcat and that thing was just flat amazing on a stump. The prices may surprise you because of the huge improvement in technology from years ago with tools like the Bobcat.

I have a small dozer, and honestly, there is no way, absolutely no way I could have removed those stumps with my own equipment in any time frame that would have been acceptable...not to mention equipment repairs.

The guy I hired would work by the hour or by the stump and in my case, it was much better to work by the hour because I had enough for about 2 days of work. The set up time kills you if you have only a small number of stumps.

Check it out, it may not be as bad as you think.

I just finished grinding 180 stumps from my property in South Louisiana. I rented a large stump grinder with automatic sweep from Home Depot for $160 a day. It took me 2 ten hour days to do the stumps. They ranged in size from 2'' to 18". This was only about $2 a stump with gas.

I am not as young as I used to be but it was fairly easy work with this grinder. I had rented a smaller, cheaper grinder a few years back and it almost worked me to death and wound up costing more to rent in the long run because it did the stumps so much slower.

Tally - - thanks, but doing it myself is not an option. I don't have the time - - I'm retired.
BTW, I just sent you private message.

Just an update - - I have received 2 estimates, one for $400 [by the job], and one for $420 [$15/stump]. Better prices than I expected.

I had one stump ground and it was like 75$. There are some serious economies of scale going on here.

I had a guy grind 130 pine stumps in my pasture that were 16" to 28" for $10 per stump. The same guy charged me $150 to come back at another time and grind one oak stump that was about 40" in diameter and about three feet tall.

Some of those prices are not bad! I had 13 stumps done that ranged from 14" to 32-36" and he charged me $800. It was a bid job and thought it would take him longer. He wrapped it up with a nice job in under 2 hrs!

I'm starting to like the idea of stump grinding for many of us who just want to convert forest into something that we can mow.

No digging, no burning, recycle the wood debris, instant gratification, etc.

If a guy could harvest the logs, chip the branches and tops, and then grind the stumps he would have a smoothish pasture that was minimally disturbed.

In my area, the grinders charge $1+, per inch, per tree

I had a guy come out two years ago to grind out three stumps in my yard. He charged me $80.00. A few years back I had a guy come out with a dozer to clear about 1/4 acre for about $75.00 per hour. It took him less than an hour to clear out trees and stumps. I cleaned the rest up with my tractor ( a little Kubota B6000 at the time). Unless you don't want to disturb the surounding area, I would consider a small dozer.

Just my $0.02....

Where are you in East Texas? I'm near Greenville and was wondering if I could get the name of the guy that you used with the Bobcat?

Thanks

I am in Northeast, LA and I charge a minimum of $75. If you have 10 or more average size stumps I charge $15 a piece. If you have a whole lot like some of you are saying I would charge by the job. It would be a lot less than $15 a stump. Also blow overs cost more because they take longer and are harder on the equipment when you start getting loose pieces.

Man, those are cheap prices for grinding. I think I paid $2 per inch 10 years ago.

Just remember there will still be roots left underground, so grinding may not be the best solution depending on what you want to do with the ground.

For large stumps the best answer may be to pull them out with an excavator. It is always more effective and does a better job than a dozer. Faster, less ground disturbance and it can bury the stump in place, if that's what you want.

around here, bid on one oak stump (18") was $100 to $200. And they still wouldn't bother coming out and I ended up doing it myself :(

Depending on the size of the stumps and what you are wanting to do with the land, a skid steer mulcher might be a good choice. I just had 10 acres of 3yr cutover cleared. $150/hr and about 1/2 acre per hour with stumps, mostly pine with some hardwood down in the bottom, every few feet. It now looks like somebody spread bags of mulch all over it.

I spent $540 for a half day of stump grinding a month ago.
