Hello all,

Long time since I post in the forum. I have been doing a bit of traveling, which has kept me away from my toys :( ...but now I am back!

I did what I could to keep my Chinese battery going for two winters, but now is time to get something better for my JM284 (2006 model). I was wondering if I could get some recommendations from you guys. It gets pretty cold here in Colorado's Front Range so cold cranking power is important for me. Have any of you tried the EverStart MAXX-65S from Walmart?. It scored well here ConsumerReports.org - Auto batteries, Ratings

Thanks!

Tanks MrJimi. The warranty on the Walmart one is really good too. Any specific models you can recommend for the 284?

:D I have no idea what a 284 is, I measure my battery and draw a little picture where the connecting terminals are and get the most CCA
:) :)

Sorry, I assumed everyone knows the Jinmas in this forum :p The 284 is one of the most popular Jinma tractors. Good value, but horrible battery!

Thanks for your help

I have a Case 1845 C skidsteer :D and I make lots of different attachments and lots more to come, I'm slowly working on a 7' wide rake that will also grapple.
Check out my 2 galleries

Some Jinmas have the battery tray right in front of the radiator. This impedes airflow AND promotes clogging of the radiator fins behind the battery. So when the battery is up front, the shorter the better. A very good battery in this respect is the Group 49. Even better is the Group 93. I have one of those on my KM454. It's like a Group 49 on steroids.

Walmart doesn't carry either. Interstate makes both, but be prepared for sticker shock. AutoZone carries a cheaper version of the 49, but I personally recommend the Interstate. Make sure what you buy fits in the battery tray. The physical measurements and amp ratings are here: Automotive Batteries - Product Features

I put in a 31P battery in my 2003 model. It has the battery mounted out front below the radiator. It was a good fit and had the same type of post that the OEM battery had. I am guessing it is a Group 31 and the P stands for post. I am lucky, I have a battery factory down the road 6 miles. I took the battery to them and told them what it was for. They sell new batteries out the back door cheap. I paid $35. I bought 4 deep cycle batteries for my big boat and they were the same price.

Thats great info Greg, thanks! I looked at mine and the battery tray is in front but under the radiator so I don't think that should be a problem. I will look into the Interstate at the local retailer.

Wow, that's really cheap! I will most definitively have to spend more than that :-(

Thanks for the info

Here is a pic. Not my tractor but just like mine minus the FEL. Anyway here is where the battery is located.

Wow, what good timing for this to come up again. My factory original battery is loosing it's stuff in the cold after 2 winters and 200+ hours. Had trouble starting it twice this last week, temps both in the lower 30's. It was acting like it wasn't getting enough pre-heat out of the glow plugs with a smokey, only partial ignition, had to hold the starter on a few extra seconds after I dropped the compression release kinda start. Third time(about the same temp) I put on a charger and boostd it just before trying and it started right up like it normally does.

I put a Cosco battery in my garden tractor this last fall and it dosn't want to hold a charge. I never had any trouble cranking the lawn mower over with the factory battery in the winter...

I am still using the factory original battery, in my 02 jinma 284. (now I have some glow plug issues for some reason. I changed the fuse which was blown, but it blew again OR wasn't the problem. I run mine a lot in winter but leave it hooked up to one of the in-expensive maintainers. I also had some of the battery chemical treatment material (blue liquid stuff) I got from harbor freight into the battery 2~3 yrs back which revived the battery after leaving the key on over 3 weeks... I tried to find the stuff recently and HF stopped selling it I guess. I have seen it in the older catalogs for JCwhitney cost in there was 10 times as much as HF was though. I think I paid 4 bucks or so for it at HF. Also the maintainer I got is a Pulsed one which also keeps them better as the pulsing knocks off the sulphate from the lead plates according to the MFG. I got the battery and it was a dry one used acid from NAPA and charged it up correctly using a 200 amp charger over night started on 200 amps for ~2 min, then 50 amps for ~15 min then 5 amp trickle over night... I think there is some great info on how to make a batttery/charge one from scratch if it is not done right (high amp till it boils then amps to keep boiling then slow charge until full the battery will not last.)

Just wanted to point out how mine was done, and how it is still going. I'm glad I had the HF close to get the battery stuff... I know a lot of people think that is is simple BS on that battery chemical but on mine is really worked as it would only take about 11.5 volts charge after leaving the key on for so long and draining it to a near completely dead state... I think the PULSED charger also helped a LOT as it still took a few days after the chemical to get the battery back to 100%+ of where it was prior to the key thing, also note I left the key ON 2 more times since and have not had the totally dead battery problem, but it was only ON over night or for a few days...

Hello all,

Just wanted to post an update.
After charging the battery again without success, last week I bought the MAXX-27N from Walmart. It fits perfectly in the tractor, and has about 900 CCA. At only $69 and a 3/year warranty (plus 5 years prorated) I thought it was a bargain!

I has made a huge difference. I have been able to start the tractor even in the cold Rocky Mountain days (10-15ーF) without a problem and haven't had the need to plug the radiator heather. I have only had the battery for a week off course, so I will let you know if things change.

Can someone please tell me how the compression release works in my 2006 Jinma 284 to help starting the engine? Sitting in my tractor the chrome lever is in the down position in front of me. Do i just turn it UP for a compression release start & then turn the lever back down?

I just bought my tractor last week. First time i've had one.........:)

Thankyou

You got it. What I do is turn the CRL and crank till I see oil pressure. Then heat the glow plugs and crank. Once it starts to fire move it back and she will spring to life.

The lever you mentioned is connected to a linkage that goes through the valve cover. Inside it's connected to a mechanism that sits over the valves. When you rotate the lever 90 degrees, the mechanism opens 3 valves just enough to release the compression that would otherwise start and run the engine. You want it released on a cold engine so that the heavy flywheel can spin up faster. It's also easier on the battery and starter motor, and gets oil pumping before detonation begins.
