zero turn oil filter?

I have a z920 jd mower. I purchased a oil filter from o'reilly( 13.00)wix brand. jd original filter about the same. was wondering if these filters are any better than a walmart fram( 4.50) is it really worth the difference ? is there something special about these lawnmower filters that is necessary or is it just a rip off? thanks for any input

Unlike auto filters, lawnmower filters have the bypass valve built into the filter whereas auto have the bypass built into the oil pump. so in theory, if the filter would clog it could starve the engine of oil if there is no bypass in the filter.

Lawnmower filters are contain anti drain valves.

I also think they are a different thread size than automotive oil filters.

Most automotive filters have a bypass built into the filter. If the filter clogs, the relief spring in the top compresses and the oil can still flow. I use automotive filters on my Mitsubishi and Kubota diesels. Same filter actually. Thousands of hours. Not a single problem.
Friend of mine insisted on buying a Kubota brand oil filter recently. Proudly printed on the side, Made In Red China. ( I added the word Red for my own amusement). Can't see spending 11.00 for a Chinese filter that should cost 3.00.

I bought the Wix from O'reillys for the 5303, looks identical to the JD.I changed the oil in my 920 this year, the dealer gave me the filter/oil being they said they'd do the first one free.
$13 is cheap compared to the cost of an engine, the 5303 is due a hydraulic change, pretty sure i'll eat the cost & go with OEM.

If you want to go by looks, then remember that looks can be deceiving.
Don't know who O'reillys is, but if you didn't buy the JD filter for your engine then you are cutting corners that I wouldn't chance.
But is your dime.

Agreed. Regular, timely oil changes are the best thing you can do for your engine. Weather it be my equipment or vehicles. I always go with the factory parts. I have been to numerous trainings showing the difference between factory parts and aftermarket parts including oil filters. I would much rather spend a couple extra bucks for my piece of mind.

But not everyone feels the same and all are entitled to their own opinion. Just my two cents worth.
