A neighbor kid when I was growing up had a mini bike. It did not have a kill switch or a good brake. I was moving along at a pretty good clip because the throttle hung and decided I wanted to stop. I tried reaching down and pressing in the little tab against the plug to kill the engine. I missed and it shocked the piss out of me. I crashed the mini bike but got it stopped.

Santa brought my daughter one when she was 7. Turning 10 now and still loves to ride. 3 year old rides with me on mine.

I went the name brand route in a 125 for the girl. The thing has a throttle limiter and will haul my 250 lb carcass, so I figure it will be good for JR here in a few years also.

Looking back I probably could've went Chinese. I know of several that are 5-6 years old around here, and most were 1/3 the money or less. They still run good, though.

I think he would be fine on either one of the ATVs but i am doing i project for school right on ATV safety and most fatailites and accidents are due to not wearing the proper attire like a helmet number one safety rule

Ditto on the motorcycle. Some of the reasons are already said above. Another one is that when a 4w hits something, it stops, but the rider doesn't = very bad. 2w's don't stop, but deflect, usually away from the object, usually a tree = much safer. The self-regulating reason is a biggie. I am an avid 42yr old 2w rider/racer, and my kids, 7&9 ride, but they are not allowed on 4w's. Everyone thinks they are safer. They are not.
Anything is dangerous without proper gear, training, common sense, etc...
