I don't know if this qualifies, but it is what I use to haul my tractors. The new trucks with all the EPA crud on the engines really didn't appeal to me. I'd rather have something I could fix without needing a computer and PHD in electronics. I found this 1976 White for a very reasonable price and a trailer to go with it. The mileage could be better, but considering the whole thing was less than $6k I can afford some fuel.

I've come close to pulling the trigger on an older COE like yours, but the insurance and registration boogeyman scared me away. Also I'm not sure i could convince authorities that all my hauling is non-commercial (I don't haul for hire, but I have a small business and buy a lot of stuff at estate/warehouse sales).

Very cool setup you have there. What are the specs on the drivetrain?

Not an option here for most... large diesel rigs with non compliant engines are being forced off the road and even farm use has very strict limitations...

A while back I started a thread about an older Gentleman I know with an immaculate 2003 Dump Truck that he bought new and couldn't give away because the cost to re-power was north of 20k

Insurance and legislation like UR is talking about are probably the limiting factors. If one can clear those hurdles, with what a new one-ton costs, going with a deal like that you can buy a lot of diesel fuel.

I like the simplicity of the older designs - with just minimal maintenance, they will run a long time...

While it costs money to run/maintain any machine - I'm a fan of not having monthly payments.... if times get tough, you can just drive less, or park it - with no foul incurred.

I often thought if I needed a really heavy-duty tow vehicle, I would do something like this:

Lackey Sailing, LLC | Boatbuilders, Boat Restorers, and Marine Surveyors

Don't know if it has a 2 speed axle, but that would be nice to have. I assume that this one has hdyraulic brakes, since he installed an air compressor to supply air to the trailer he pulls (suspension, not air brakes).

Of course, there is the CDL issue, as I would not qualify for the "farm use" exemption in this state.
