Hosting is easy. I host one on a business DSL line with a windows XP professional machine. GoDaddy gives you your domain name (DNS). On goDaddy you put the IP address that you want your name to resolve to. example, your ISP gives you a static IP of 192.168.10.1 (well, they won't give you that exact one ) and you go to godaddy and register eddiewalker.com, and you link it to your IP address.
She did a good job, looks nice.

How much are you paying a month for a business DSL line?

Pretty sure it's under $100 / month. I don't pay the bill on that one, I'll have to ask, I just do the web work. And it provides all the high speed internet you need. Most residential DSL agreements don't allow you to run a web server.
Something about her email didn't seem right though, normally people don't host web sites for free...
Also check with your current ISP, they might host a web site under your existing contract. Mine does.

Right. So $100.00 a month + the cost of the PC + the time to learn how to be a website admin VS waaaaay less annual cost to have it hosted somewhere else that probably has better bandwidth than the business line and better faster servers than most of us can afford.

While it is neat to host your own website, about the only reason for a one man shop to do it is to learn how to do it. Just my opinion, of course. Your mileage may vary. :thumbsup:

Right, it's not for everyone. But if you already have business phone line, and have DSL available, and you want internet at your business, already have a computer, there really is no additional cost. Plus, it's fun. For windows, load the IIS service and put the html files in the right directory. The DSL cost is $80 / month for a static IP. Was $30 / month the first yr (introductory rate).

What I meant when I said for Eddie to host it himself, wasn't to have a server or whatever at home running the site.

Rather to have it running where he can control it, eg he has the passwords and makes the changes.

I know of people who have had sites where someone else has the keys so to speak, and sometimes that doesn't work out.

Also godaddy were a nightmare for me to deal with a few years back, but i've moved on with my life and I really don't want to go into it.
