Your Opinion Please, Part 2

   / Your Opinion Please, Part 2 #61
Hey Eddie, I've been trying to contact you via PM, but haven't had any luck so far. I am a single mom in college and would love to have more websites to add to my portfolio. I've put a website together for you, at no cost. I just need more "live" sites for my portfolio :) Let me know what you think:
Edward Walker - General Contractor

I can even host it on my server if you would like, it's unlimited so it wouldn't cost me anything extra to add your site. Let me know if you are interested, you can email me at rmalone77@gmail.com

Thanks!

That is a good looking site, I think it looks very professional.
I'd host it on your own server though eddie, as you can retain control.

I don't understand what it means to host it? Right now, I'm registered with GoDaddy. What would change?

Thanks,
Eddie

Eddie,
To host a website means you own the server it lives on. You would need a machine running web server software, and a static IP address, which would cost you some dough. Probably not worth the hassle and costs at all, unless you really, really want to learn how to operate and maintain a web server. That can become a career in itself.

I didn't read every bit of it, but it does look nice. How do you all feel about the "Edward Walker" part of it? If marketing to the upscale crowd, maybe this is a positive?

Ditto. She's done a nice job.

I was a little suspicious at first. I was thinking it might be a spam link or something. But actually it looks like she put a lot of time and effort into that, and my gut feeling is that its a genuine offer.

What did you guys think?

I think I'd be very cautious. A one-time post from someone like this should be treated like a person handing you their business card on the street. They may be legit and have some real talent behind the facade, but you cannot afford to blindly accept an offer like this and hand over what you want to rely on for the future of your business. If you were taking your car to a mechanic, you'd want to know about them. I think Eddie should do as he thinks is best with caution and investigation. Nobody who is legit minds people who check them out. As a matter of fact, they welcome it.

I can totally understand anyone being cautious about the offer. I'm not trying to make anything from this. I'm just trying to help someone out. I found this forum through a homesteading forum that I read on a daily basis. They mentioned a post by eddie about making a home out of shipping containers. From there I found his post about building lake marabou and literally spent days reading the entire thread. I found Eddie to be very inspiring and he seems like a very nice, genuine person. I wanted to do something to help him out and I've been building websites since 97 so I figured I could help him out with his. I do have references if you want them Eddie.

As far as hosting goes, I only offered mine (hostgator) because it's completely unlimited and it would be easier for me to access it to make updates or install anything new that he wants. If he chooses to go with his own host, I have all the website files zipped up and ready to send to him with no strings attached. All he would have to do is upload them and his site would be working on his host without any configuration needed.

I realize that there are a lot of dishonest people on the internet and it's hard to trust anyone. I would be more than happy to email my phone number to you Eddie if you would like to talk to me in person (as long as you don't mind my 4 year old making a ton of background noise).

Hosting is easy. I host one on a business DSL line with a windows XP professional machine. GoDaddy gives you your domain name (DNS). On goDaddy you put the IP address that you want your name to resolve to. example, your ISP gives you a static IP of 192.168.10.1 (well, they won't give you that exact one :) ) and you go to godaddy and register eddiewalker.com, and you link it to your IP address.
She did a good job, looks nice.
