Actually, ive seen them too tight with as little as 25run hours.

This thread has made me much more diligent about test runs. Today did the 6500w Honda (electric start no issue), the 2200w Honda (2nd pull), and the 30 year old Craftsman 3500w (2nd pull). I should really sell the Craftsman, the 6500w Honda is the replacement. But nobody wants an old generator and I like the old machine too much anyway.

I can see where a new engine might come with tight valves. But I can't see how valve train wear (camshaft, lifter, pushrod, rocker arm, valve stem) could cause anything but loose lash.

Valve clearance adjustments are so much easier and quicker using go/no go stepped feeler guages.
And a real confidence builder.

Good Luck!

Youd think, but of the 100’s ive adjusted, there almost always too tight. Weird

It is the valves them self wearing and receding into the seats which allows the valve to ride higher then it did from the factory, if the valves have been lapped into the seats it will very seldom happen,
that is not done on many small engines.

Ok I can see that. Valve seat not lapped in so initial use causes quick wear reducing the lash. Have to check the owners manuals on the new Honda gens see what it says about initial run in and valve adjustment.

Finally visited my friends generator in person.

I misunderstood completely. I thought he built that stand and "fuel" tank. That's the way it came from the Federal Government (backup at a light house).

Stainless tank is crankcase oil reservoir!

I think he said the beast weighs 1900 pounds!
