I just started my conventional Kubota/Onan 7.5 on account of the high wind. It's not very noisy, but machine and exhaust going out the wall, are much noiser than the 7.5 Quiet Diesel/Inverter. Both are 3 cylinder Kubota and the inverter even runs slightly faster than 1800rpm. And it's not just the sound deadened box. I didn't expect that. I'm thinking maybe they tuned the exhaust, but don't get the engine being quieter.

They spent a lot of time making that inverter unit quiet with a custom designed muffler and exhaust. The standard package is most likely the Kubota exhaust package.

On the surge, is it a continuous hunt or are you just hearing the engine speed when load changes? This unit will only run as fast as necessary to deliver the kW being used. If it has sat for a long time the pump plungers may be hanging up a little causing a little instability. A little injector cleaner wouldn’t hurt but 9 out of 10 times, instability is due to air in the fuel. Air will usually cause some blue/grey smoke at light or no load as it also causes the timing to be late which in turn lowers the cylinder temperatures.

Thanks. The exhaust on my regular unit was something picked in a friends junk pile. The noise is not objectionable, just noticed it is a lot louder than the QD.

The QD is not hunting. I had shut off the electric heat and water heater for my test, and didn't understand why the unit hickuped, but it was probably the fridge or freezer. It doesn't help that I am using a jerry can and keep disconnecting my lines.

That unit does make a good amount of smoke on start up but goes clear quite quickly. Who, knows how long since it has been run. Initially, the smoke was just crazy.

AND, just curious. Have you faught with those seized terminal blocks?

Sitting for unknown time..... sometimes things will smooth out, with a bit more running in.....

You may well have done 'em already....... filters......... if either is getting plugged, it won't help during heavy transients. They often get neglected, and esp. if that QD is out of what I'm guessing it came from.....

Duelling Kb diesels..... you do get up to all kinds of fun IT !

Where this thing came from was a total surprise. Kind of a bate and switch. The one that I was supposed to get, suddenly had to go back to the customer, but, I aint complainin, that one apparently had less hours, but needed a $1500.00 inverter section pretty much for sure. This one has around 2300 hours.

Someone else on here also run their generators only at 230, going into an auto transformer. Using only one side of a transformer. I am curious, if I could forget about my 110-220 transformer for my inverter generator and simply put the 110 into my auto transformer and it would make up the other half.

The inverter wouldn’t care if it’s connected to an auto or isolated transformer, the only time that matters is where you need to create a new isolated neutral usually for zoned ground fault protection.

No, I’ve not fought the terminal strip you’re referring to I don’t see much under than 1500kw. You may find something close enough to work at your local electronics parts store, eBay, Digikey or Allied Electronics.

generator version of grammar-****... 120/240 there is no 110/220 even for farmers.

I don't need 'maintenance runs'. The power goes out here at least once a month. It doesn't matter if there is freezing rain or if the sun is shinning.
Ontario Hydro is THE most unreliable utility I have ever seen.
The power went out last night, again. The second time this month.

Yes, it is a positively vicious windstorm, with power outages all over Ontario. And it was supposed to lighten up early this morning, but it is in fact stronger than ever right now. Worst I have ever seen.

Hard to believe a hydro plant stopped producing, isn't the problem the distribution lines and wires getting knocked down?
Hydro, solar and wind make so much sense. But I bet they still make up only a small part of overall electric production.
And unless you run underground lines, always going to lose power in bad storms.
L4N, Check and others, be careful out there.

I lose power here at least once a month, sometimes more often. Usually for less than an hour, but sometimes 3 to 4 hours, and sometimes, my worst so far, five days. Thankfully running on propane I avoid a lot of starting problems, but 22kw Generac does not like starting in ten degree weather at all. Really needs to warm up more before load slams on, now there would be a nice remote control function, allowing you to remotely throw the breaker at your demand. Bet that switch would cost a fortune.

put on a cold weather kit. My unit starts in minus temps with no issues,
