I was also going to comment on the Detroit. My dad ran lots on the sawmill and farm when I was growing up. The sawmill had a 6V-71 and a Silver 92. When I was a lumber piler and you heard them grunting you know that a mess of heavy planks were headed your way to pile.

A Silver 6-92 or 8-92? They took the latter out to 750hp in "high performance" marine applications and you were lucky to get 2000 hours out of them. If that was an 8 cylinder, that was a big saw! 6-92s from memory went out to 550hp, but never in industrial applications, always used continuous ratings. And then came DDEC...

One would think a backup generator would always use a continuous rated engine. Can't build them for a low price though.

One reason I was considering the T-6 was to simplify my oil needs. Kubota tractor is already on a T-6 diet and new truck will be after first oil change.

Plenty of folks have done like Lou has, and you are considering....... good too if you have helpers around checking machines.... just one type of bottle to reach for.

Re. your integrator - Nice working with people who know machinery well... they usually know what to do, and when, w/o being asked. Cold temperatures combined with low-loads are harder on most engines than a lot of people realize.

Lou, you own a Driptroit? marvelous engine, sounds like nothing else, often
a bit undermuffled and loud. I used 40wt Delo in mine years back.
Today's oil sure seems watery in comparison

Yes, it's in an old Dynahoe 190-4 backhoe a screaming jimmy 4-53.
Yes straight 40 weight delo in the summer and 30 if I use it in the winter.

It was an 8-92. I think running around 500 horse. It was connected to a bull edger with ten gang saws (I think 32” diameter) spaced 2” apart. You would feed a 10” cant into it and it would split it into 2X10’s. Eight 2X10’s coming out the back end would make it grunt.

The 6-71 was connected to the head saw, 54” I believe, and to the hydraulic pumps for various conveyers chains and for the carriage drive.

I spent every summer from grade six until first year college as a lumber piler. I then spent two years straight as the loader operator driving a case 821B wheel loader and a zetor forklift. Loved working there and miss it at times.

Well where I live we have so many outages that maintenance runs are redundant.
Over the last 8-10 years or so we seem to enjoy some 3-5 outages annually.
In my case I simply shut off the fuel petcock and run my genny dry.
To start, full choke + manually full throttle and it starts right up.
I do let the battery live on a solid state maintenance charger so that helps as it is always up to full capacity.
The other thing is that I only use high test (no gas a hoal) fuel also full synthetic oil.
My genny has been most satisfactory for over 10 years now.

I'm probably bringing up a subject that has been beaten to death but I will admit I am a full fuel tank guy and I don't run the carb dry. Had that 'bad' habit for as long as I remember. About the only engine I do that to is my outboard motor when I flush the salt water from it. Other gas 2 or 4 strokes, I never have. After 50years should I correct this habit?

I think it’s a regional thing. Some folks have trouble both ways. I have trouble with your way, so I turn off fuel and run empty. I don’t always keep my tank full though. But I do use sta-bil.

I hafto admit I "was" a keep the tank full on the gen. guy.. UNTIL the last few storms came thru..
I went to start the gen, after sitting a year, turned the gas on & hit the starter & gas was flooding out of the breather..
I KNEW what had happened.. It took me about 2 hrs to "fix" it.. & with a storm heading my way in afew days, I sure didn't need that trouble.
So after the storm came & went, I drained the tank, ran it dry & put it away..
Fast forward 2 weeks & I had to pull it out again.. I put fuel in it, turned on the gas & waited for it to stream out the breather.. nothing happened.{GOOD}
I hit the key & she fired right up & ran perfectly..
I put it away after the storm passed just like before.. shut off the fuel, ran it til it shut off, drained the tank..
Fast forward 2 more weeks.. Same thing.. no gas out of the carb & she fired right up.. NO MORE stuck needle in the carb..
