What ?! Nothing for the Yanmar to do ? It's going to feel lonely ! :D

The Yanmar would get the job of recharging the batteries and carrying the house load while the Honda took a rest.
That would be a 2 ~ 4 hour run depending on depth of discharge and house load.
Would probably consume about a gallon of fuel in the process.

no. there is no way for it to switch over during weekly exercise runs. youd have to reset all clocks, etc every week. id never hear the end of it. the only way would be to manually shut down transfer switch once in awhile and let the generator think that theres a power outage. i usually do this on my own unit before we head into winter.

Other than charging the starter battery, Line feed to these Generacs is mostly just a sense line - No ? If so, any reason (code wise) not to just install a switch on the feed-line, to simulate Line failure ? I'm thinking of testing the auto-transfer switch too.....

Up here, esp. in Winter, I'd definitely want a generator loaded. Definitely, for that high a capacity.

The wife just texted. Generator is now running for its "first" official power outage. I've been waiting for this and I'm not even there to experience the joy of the only one in the neighborhood with power. Lol. I guess this is a good thing having the automatic and having it start up while I'm at work and the wife and kids at home today.

Congratulations - nice feeling, I'm sure. Most of us here are hands-on types, but Murphy will often strike when we aren't there.....

Figured it had it's place in the mix. Nice coverage/redundancy, and a very efficient dzl

you could, but why bother. All you need to do is open the transfer switch and turn off the 200 amp breaker. The gen will start and transfer a real load.

Plus it would be a functional test load. :)

Good deal but the only clock reset is the new oven. Not sure why they didn't add a 50 cent battery but..

I flipped the transfer switch this weekend and turned on all the high current devices and it had no issues. I think the high was about 80 amps.

We did the same thing the day of the install but I let the genny run for about 20 minutes just for my piece of mind.

I'll just let the weekly maintenance run be without a load if you think that is OK. Thanks!

Have not had an outage in a very long time. Then Hydro One pulled in here yesterday and a long conversation revealed that they are engaging in Forestry service for our rural line back to the transformer station. GREAT! Even more reliable service!

Can't they find some other place to prune?

Lots of back-up facility and nothing for it to do!

i personally set my own 22 kw to run once a week and did not activate the quiet run feature. we generally get at least 2 power outages a year for the past 22 years, so the gen gets run under load a few times a year. and i do a manual FLIP POWER OFF AT TRANSFER SWITCH FULL LOAD RUN FOR 30 MINUTES BEFORE EVERY WINTER just to be sure everything is up and running. mind you i have a shop full of spare parts to repair it if it ever should fail....haha.

extra starters, fuel solenoids, stepper motors, batteries (get 10 as a time from exide) control boards, bunch of small parts like brushes, magnetos, etc etc

i also change oil and filter EVERY year, and i will be swapping all filters and spark plugs every other year. i run Mobil 1 5w30 synthetic and have installed the winter kit here (north Idaho)

grsthegrea i also change oil and filter EVERY year said:
Good, that's exactly what I do for my 22kw. Oil changes are strictly for condensation issues, my oil is always so clean it's actually hard to read it on the dipstick. And I go every two years on filter and plug, though the air filter looks completely new after two years. Wonder if I can go another year on that. Spark plugs on propane look pretty new too.
