shot a blast of carb cleaner into the air cleaner and it started first pull.
Moss Road, is this better than starting fluid? Less volatile but still more oomph than gas?
Does it create vapors that get things going?
Always wanted to know how that worked. Sounds like a smart move, like
using preheaters on a cold diesel.
As long as it's not hurting the engine.
I mean, a clean carb is a good carb, right?

I have used both and I much prefer starting fluid over carb cleaner for several reasons.

The starting fluid (ether) is a gas so it is atomized as soon as it leaves the can regardless of temperature. Also, the ones I use have a cylinder wall lubricant in them. Being 100% atomized immediately allows it to move into and thru the carb/intake system to the cylinders more quickly which helps the engine start faster, this is especially important if the battery you are using to crank the engine over with is on it's last breath due to age, temp or too much cranking.

The carb cleaner needs to evaporate to work, that can be a little slow at very low temps. As well, even a small shot of carb cleaner into a small engine's carb is a lot of fuel (relatively speaking) and can wash the oil off the cylinder walls.

Either work but I find the ether works far better, faster and is even cheaper to use.
