Is is decent quality? I have seen those Yanmar clones from HF, brand new, on YouTube, just glow red hot and self destruct.

Did it ever run well? How old is it?.

EDIT: I saw your other post. Fuel filter looked bad in what way?

As for the Diesels not using more fuel under load. That's just not possible. Any diesel generator I owned, always started to snort under load and drink more fuel.

Sounds like those people that always claim they can get someplace in a ridiculously short time on ridiculously little fuel. A friend always claimed what good mileage his latest truck got, stating the fuel gauge as it used a quarter tank, or something, and I have told him a hundred times, the gauge is not linear!

There is a tread on here somewhere about gray market generator motors and I can't seem to find it any help ??? What I have is a Yanmar clone 189f motor in my generator that won't stay running. All new filter and fuel lines, I bleed it and all is fine at first then after about 3 sec. it starts stumbling and rpm drops,, like it's running out of fuel??? Any help would be appreciated ?/QUOTE]

Diesels add fuel to an essentially unrestricted air supply (not counting supercharged systems, which is a negative restriction). The governor will keep adding fuel to keep at the set RPM regardless of load. The amount of extra fuel required for additional RPMs at no load is pretty minimal. Load will dramatically increase the fuel consumption.

Gasoline engines on the other hand require a stoichemetric ratio of fuel to air. The throttle throttles (restricts, strangles) the incoming air at low RPMs so that the proper fuel to air ratio is maintained. Because of those inefficiencies gas engines are much less efficient at partial "throttle".

So in theory a gas engine shouldn't use to much more fuel defendant on load. Diesel on the other hand will vary fuel consumption significantly based on load.

I'am no mechanic but did you install fuel line in same original rouiting position ? Also have you tried starting it without fuel cap ?

If the filter was real nasty pull the line off leaving the new filter see how much flow you get, then remove the line to the filter and see how that does.
You could have sludge or algae in your tank.
Also check that the return line to the tank isn't plugged.

Yes thanks..

Once the simple things are checked like plugged filter or line... it always comes down to internal carburetor corrosion... see it over and over again with ethanol and seldom used equipment.

Just checked the propane tank levels. It's been a bit over a year since we added the 2nd 500 gallon LP tank & had both old & new tanks filled.

Current gauge levels suggest we have approximately 700 gallons left between the two, so we used maybe 100 gallons over that 13 month period.

We use a propane furnace as backup heat source for the heat pump & the generator exercises once a week. We have a had a few short term outages over the period (longest was maybe 6 hours).

Unless we have a significant outage this winter, or a long stretch of really low temps, we may not need to refill next year either (my gut level trigger point for refill is in the 5-600 gallon neighborhood).
