I had a gate at the end our driveway that I installed about 20 years ago, and I finally had a more professional quality gate installed. I assumed that they would bring in some equipment to pull out the old posts, but they removed them by hand! Some of them were set in concrete.

Young muscles can do things that I can't.
My double garage door springs failed one day. I used my hi-lift jack to jack the door up a few feet because I couldn't lift it. I had a garage door company come out and a big burly guy got out of his truck and put one hand under it and raised it the rest of the way. I asked him later how much the door weighed, and he said he used 400 lbs. for his replacement spring calculations. From where I had it jacked up, there was probably still 300 lbs. on the vertical tracks.

When you often use the 'search orders' feature of the Amazon site to find out whether you bought an item or only checked to see if they had it.
Or .... you have to check amazon every day to see when your pill subscriptions will arrive.

I've been doing that one since my 40's. :D

Especially when it comes to cheap or infrequently-used tools, such as odd-ball connector crimpers or diagnostic/test tools. Easier to check Amazon to see if I already bought one, than to run out to the shop to check bins and drawers.

You know you are old when.... you can't figure out how to operate the "self-service" soda dispenser at the movie theater.

Back story - We only go to movies once or twice a year, at most, and last time I went to a movie theater was to see Top Gun Maverick (couple of years ago?). Yesterday, went to see Reagan. Refreshment stand only had self-service soda machines, however, they didn't look like any soda dispenser I have seen. The machines (three of them) looked like an ice dispenser with only one discharge chute and there were no "traditional looking" soda dispensers.

After looking at them for a while, I finally figured out that they dispensed both ice AND soda. Great, now to figure out which one had Diet Coke. First machine had picture of grape Fanta and something else, second machine had a couple of other pictures. Third machine had a bunch of small bubbles with soda names in them and finally saw Diet Coke.

About the time I was figuring out how to get Diet Coke out of this thing, Wife comes back from the restroom, goes straight to the Diet Coke "bubble" and gets us our drink.

I just kind of stood there looking sheepish.....

Bonus YKYAOW: Wife and I used to go to the movies in the afternoon during the week and joke about going with all the retired folks. Now, we ARE the retired folks.

Double bonus: I used the "over 60" discount for the first time yesterday.

All those things, combined with the movie made for quite a You Know You Are Old afternoon experience.

... or when you get irritated every time you see a "tip jar" next to the cash register of the person who rang you up for that soda.

If I could start one popular movement in this country, it would be the elimination of all tip jars, in situation where there's no personalized service being provided. You don't get a tip for pressing the "Big Mac" and "Coke" buttons on your register, or dispensing a coffee into a paper cup and then telling me where I can go get my own cream or sugar.

I believe that will be going the way of the Dodo bird. Minimum wage here is going up to $14.65 at the first of next year, and a lot of people are wondering why they also should get tipped.

Pay with a card at the local sandwich shop and the "suggested" tip starts at 18%... payable before they make your sandwich. I'm not suggesting that affects their work but I can't say it doesn't, either.

Yeah, this should just be illegal. I just say, "we'll see how good the sandwich is, before I decide on the tip."

It's not even about the money, I make more in a day than the sandwich guy does in a week, it's about principles. I tip well, when it's deserved, but I don't like the implied obligation.
