You Know You Are Old When

I remember 25 years ago, when I first started watching internet forums, I kept seeing "DAMHIKT". Took me weeks to figure out what that meant. :ROFLMAO:

Heck, I was young and cranky, never tolerated fools or jerks. I've become a little more tolerant in my old age, it just isn't worth the effort to try to make them see the light.
Especially with people you've already invested time with trying to convince them they were wrong. Then after you give up they'll come back maybe weeks later and tell you "yup, you are right".

Early in my career as an R&D engineer, I had the luck to work alongside a very quiet older guy, who'd been doing my job for roughly 40 years. He made up for what he lacked in education, with experience and an uncanny knack for reasoning out the kinds of problems we faced everyday.

When I'd be working on a circuit that wasn't behaving the way it should, I'd occasionally ask for his opinion. He'd always give me answers like, "well, I don't know at all, but maybe I'd try xxx". He'd always surround his suggestions with so much humility that you'd assume he really didn't know, and was just trying to be friendly by offering something.

So, I'd go back to pounding my head against the bench, figuring he was just guessing and had no clue better than me. But there'd usually come some point hours or days later, when all other options had been exhausted, that I'd come around to giving his suggestion a try. And wouldn't you know it, that old bugger was right on the money, almost every time.

It took a few months, and a few rounds of going through this process, until I learned to just try everything the guy ever suggested, no matter how much he tried to surround his suggestions with pretend or real self-doubt. :ROFLMAO:

If you've ever seen any photos that I've posted of an old guy skidding big logs with a Ford 3000, that's him. After a few years working together, I came to harvesting firewood for both of us from his property. I'd fell, buck, and set the chokers, and he'd drag them out of the woods and stage them for trailering or processing.

I texted a coworker, who is a recent college grad, about plans for the week and asked if it was raining where he was. When he answered in the affirmative I wrote back
"PITA".

I then had to explain what it meant.
I'm finding just the opposite on my end.

Seems I communicate more with my son via texting than actually talking over the phone.

I'm the one ALWAYS asking what the heck his acronyms are (seems the younger generation has their acronyms down for quick texting).

That said, the other week he told me he was A1CIC and was taking on more responsibility working longer hours. I asked if that meant he was "Airman First Class In Charge" and I was right! I told him via text that in the civilian world he's working towards "HMFIC". One of the few times he had no clue what the acronym stood for LOL

My friend passed at 78 and was still running his business until the last few days… he said can’t let the old man in.

Pancreatic cancer moves fast but he was glad to have the time to pull the family together and give instructions to each and schedule meeting with his lawyer and cpa…

At 77 he reroofed his 20x30 shop and until recently would regularly walk the several miles from his business home with the last mile being a trail with rapid ascent…

Something to be said going out on your own terms…

When I bought my first Kubota I was hitched and ready to make the 500 mile round trip and he stopped by and flipped me the keys to his new Diesel Excursion saying better to have extra capacity opposed to being maxed with my V6 S10 pickup.

Blessed to have good friends but so many have passed these last few years…

Maybe you are old when you are the last man standing?

A buddy's father passed while re-roofing their house. He was in his early 70's, and into fasting.

Apparently putting a new roof on your house in summer heat, while fasting in your 70's, is a recipe for negative outcomes. Who knew?

I've never had the gall to ask him how they got the body off the roof. Seemed an insensitive question, no matter how curious I am.
