You Know You Are Old When

You know your old when the minimum hourly wage equals your first daily wage for 8 hours.
Yes, pretty close. My first summer job at age 11 was working in the tobacco field. $8 per day. Had a blast working with my friends all summer. Hard, hot, filthy work. Loved it. 😄

Started in the family business when I was 7. Got paid 10 cents and hour. Had to have a talk with my uncle. 10 cents an hour, 8 hours a day, 80 cents a day. Lunch at McDonald's cost me $1.00. Negotiated a 150% pay increase. Went form 10 cents to 25 cents and hour.

Would YOU want to work for $7.25/hr today? Can't imagine any business thinking they can attract a workforce paying that. Not that I agree with what some states are mandating either...
It's called free market economy. If someone is willing to work for $7.25/hr, and they're capable of doing the work, then that's where the wage stays. If everyone decides there are better options, then the business paying $7.25 will eventually have to raise their rate to find competent workers.

It's the way our economy used to work, and outside of "one factory towns", it worked pretty well.

Now it’s $20 and being cited fast food is closing and a burger combo is $18.

I don't agree with minimum wage, the market will sort this out. Don't like what I'm paying? Find another job. When I can't get help, I'll have to raise my pay to employees.

Minimum wage don't count in my shop, never has. I have skilled employees (tool and die makers) and they make almost 50 bucks an hour plus benefits. Had the same 2 guys for years, don't even have to be there, self starters and know exactly what to do, no supervision required.

Back on subject... You know when you are old when your feet go to sleep while sitting on the throne, waiting to 'baptize a Baby Ruth'......

It no longer works that way…

I know a young single mother of 1 excited minimum wage was going up…

She was in shock when the daycare she uses raised prices citing the higher wage law.

She now thinks higher wages is all about getting more tax money from her and where she qualified for a small subsidy for childcare the higher wage now means she makes slightly too much.

Without touching on politics (which is verboten on here), suffice to say I believe you know who the 'instigator' of that is without mention his name other than to say I refer to him as 'Oatmeal Brain'...

Everything is going up. I've taken no less than 5 substantial increases in material costs for the shop in this last year. it's a viscous, not just for her, but for everyone, including my wife and I. We aren't eating hand to mouth by any means but we feel it as well and now the sharp increase in motor fuel costs don't help any either.

At least with my 3 rentals, I still manage to chuck it away monthly and we both have excellent pensions but a lot of folks are up against it and we know and see it everyday. Why we donate to the local food pantry and the church we belong to serves dinner every weekend and we contribute foodstuffs to that as well. We always try to do our part to held those less fortunate than ourselves.

Just like every stray animal that lands here, gets to stay here and be cared for, no matter what. Of course it's mostly cats (that I don't particularly like) but they weren't given a choice so they are all welcome here, get cared for, vet needs taken care of and our 11 year old pure bred Aussie tolerates them as well. I think he remembers he was a cast off many years ago. Good pup, in fact every pup we have had the honor of taking care of has been good pups.

Don't think you can come here as we only take in 4 legged animals....lol... and the house is pretty full presently with 10 cats inside, a pup and about 15 more roaming around outside and all of them are a bit overweight as well. My wife believes in excessive nutrition, most of them were starved and abused, we try to male their lives as comfortable as possible. Gotta go, our Aussie is demanding attention...

Nailed it. The IRS only raised the lower tax bracket thresholds by 5.5% - 6.0% for 2024, in the face of some doubling of minimum wages. If the offending states follow suit, they'll be collecting a heck of a lot more in income tax. This is somewhere between a wash and a net-negative for minimum wage earners, as prices increase to reflect the increasing cost of service.
