When we kids got sick my mother would always say "It's the grip" you could have a took ache and it was the grip.
when we really, really got sick she would call the DR and he would come to the house.
I remember my mother using the term "grip", usually had to do with throwing up. Even as a kid in the 50s I don't remember my doctor making house calls, though he might have. I do doctors' offices being a lot more flexible with scheduling...usually could get right in if it was urgent. Dunno if our small-town hospital had an ER or not.

Our family Doc when I was growing was an Army Surgeon from WW II, his bed side manor could have been better or so I recall hearing, don't recall it ever bothering me. His office was in the downstairs of his house and he lived in the upstairs. He made a lot of house calls, if he got an emergency call to go out at times he would leave a note on his front door, sometimes were he was going and the phone number for other "emergency's"

It wasn't until January 11, 1964 that the Surgeon General's Report on Smoking found that smoking causes lung cancer.

Up until that time nobody thought purposely inhaling smoke had any harmful effects, regardless of the fact that everybody coughs their head off on the first puff.

But marijuana use is OK because that smoke won't hurt you? That's what "they" claim, but I don't believe it.

My grandfather was a medic in the Russian army pre-revolution. Conventional wisdom back then was that smoking would make your heart turn black. He figured it was BS since no bodies he came across had black hearts.

Our family doctor made house calls in the 1960s. One of my sisters had rheumatic fever and he'd come by every day to check on her. Did the same for my dad after he got in a car accident. Folks rented a hospital bed and he spent several weeks in it in our family room. Doc would stop by once in a while to check on him. Doc retired and our next DR did not make house calls.

Interesting tidbit... our Doctor got beaten by the Chicago police by during the 1968 riot at the Democratic National Convention. He was a delegate and just happened to step out of his hotel lobby onto the sidewalk and got caught up in the riot. Gotta say, the cops didn't discriminate... they beat everyone. :cautious: They arrested the Doc and it made local news.

I was with my grandfather passed at home in 1986. He was dressed for work, he was a doctor when he had a massive heart attack. It took rescue squad forever arriving and he said "don't let them lay me down". When they came in I was helping this volunteer get oxygen equipment together as another guy quickly laid him over...too late...he regurgitated and asphyxiated.
Born in late 1800s, he was still charging $5 for an office visit and sharpened his hypodermic needle on a stone before giving a shot.
In the 1960s he delivered a baby for a family who lived on a mountain close to use by driving his Farmall tractor there.

I don't remember being sick but that he was going to give me a shot for something.
When I saw him preparing the needle and the size of it I took off. I remember them trying to corner me.
I was small enough to run under tables etc.
Funny thing is I don't remember if I got that shot or not. Must have but...?
I remember wandering around the pediatrician's office around age 3 or 4, while the doc was giving my younger brother a check-up. I remember it very clearly because, after wandering into an adjacent exam room, a nurse came in and gave me a shot in my rear! I was so upset, thinking I accidentally got someone else's shot, whoever was supposed to be in that room, since I wasn't supposed to be there. :ROFLMAO:

Now I know that it was probably a shot I was due, and the nurse was just sent to find me and administer it. But for at least a year back then, I swore I unfairly got someone else's shot.

Smoking doctors. WTH were they thinking :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

Vicks and Mercurochrome can cure anything.
Lots of Vicks vapor rub, when I was a kid. That and Robitussin were mom's go-to choices.

I was probably in my 30's before I ever tried NyQuil for a bad cold or flu. If your stomach can take the syrup, it's a great way to sleep off a cold! Damn stuff will knock you out for 3-4 hours after each dose. :ROFLMAO:

Military C rations came with cigarettes 5 to a pack.
After the war, the big one WW2, my parents where in displaced persons camps.
They looked forward to Red Cross packages from the USA.
1 LB of Hersey's chocolate.
1 LB coffee.
1 cartoon of Marlboro cigarettes.
Each was used as currency on the black market and according to the old man was good for the attentions of a Arian woman for a weekend.
He was amused by the number of black babies 9-10 months after the war.
During the war both participants would have been shot without question.
