Did anyone else remember when you grandparents told your parents to not let a cat sleep with a baby, because it could suck the breath out of them, asphyxiating them?

Absolutely. Cats will steal a baby's breath and my mother 100% believed it. That's why we never had cats.

Did anyone else remember when you grandparents told your parents to not let a cat sleep with a baby, because it could suck the breath out of them, asphyxiating them?

I'd heard that later in my life from friends. But I had to laugh. The day my mom and dad brought me home from the hospital, our cranky 3 year old cat adopted me and slept in my crib every night, and then my bed every night, for the next 18 years! She died at age 21.

And almost weekly, she'd bring her 'kitten' a dead critter and leave it in my bed. YIKES! MOM!!!!!!

We've always had cats. They were never kept away from our kids and slept with them frequently as infants.

I think I read a study somewhere that said they found one instance of a cat falling asleep on an infant's face and the poor child passed away. A tragedy for sure. But there's zero documented cases of cats sucking the breath out of babies.

I'd be more concerned about dirty cat litter getting in the crib. Just like pregnant women should not handle dirty kitty litter or clean cat boxes.

I have a friend that says she had childhood asthma, so her grandma made her sleep with a Chihuahua every night. She said the dog would take her asthma away, and eventually it did!

Now if you think about it, many kids outgrow childhood asthma on their own. And many Chihuahuas develop breathing issues as they get older.

But man, that's a folklore story for sure!

I’m a childhood asthmatic, who outgrew it in my 20’s. Never slept with a Chihuahua.
