We rented our VHS cassettes at a mom and pop video rental store built into an old barn through the 1980's, which eventually grew to basically fill the entire barn, maybe the largest selection I'd ever seen of video casettes in any single location. Then everyone switched to West Coast Video early 1990's, probably because they got more new releases earlier than anyone else, and had more liberal return policies than the mom-and-pop stores. Blockbuster took over around here sometime mid-/late-1990's, until Netflix killed them ca.2010.
