I am considering adding a block heater to my 336. Has anyone had any bad experience with removing the threaded plug behind the starter. Since it's been 25 yrs since it was built I didn't want to create myself a problem.

I haven't.. If it's too cold to start the yanmar,, it's too cold for me to be on it:D

I've got cows to feed all winter. i'm sure the yanmar will start without the heater but it would be much easier on it.

Not sure yours has the 1/2" square socket. If so, my reading on it indicates it sometimes bends a breakover with a cheater pipe on it. Leanord Sheafer (parts business) recommended loosening the plug before purchasing the heater.

I thought about removing all the paint I could then soaking it with penetrating oil for a while before trying it.I think your right on the 1/2".

If it appears it will not come out or about to break.. You can always use a heat lamp close to the block.. That's what some guys I know use.

Penetrating oil is of little value on pipe threads. They are liquid tight.

I may try to remove the plug tomorrow before I order a heater. I have a few of the tank type heaters but not sure how good one of them would work. The only place I could hook one up would be to the block drain and that hose might not be large enough to allow the heater to work.

I installed a block heater a few months back on my 187d and had the same concerns as you...I had read about how impossible to remove the plugs could be. Bought some good extensions and an SK breaker bar. The plug turned out as easy as if someone had done it the day before. YMMV but I wouldn't be afraid of it before you try. Just make sure the extension is fully seated in the plug so you don't round it out.

Also, I should have installed a block heater years ago. The improvement in cold weather starting is pretty amazing. It's like hopping on a pre warmed tractor when it's been plugged in.

That gives me hope. Thanks for your response.

I use a block heater in my 336 as well as a heater in the differential. Keep an eye on your electric usage it will be significant. I put mine on a timer that can be sent for time of day and day of week.

Heat seams to be your friend with removal of this plug. I warmed the tractor up first for 45min. or so, and with it still warm, loosened the plug, waited for the engine to cool down and drained the coolant first before installing the block heater plug. I couldn't break that plug loose cold, almost easy with the engine block warm. My Yanmar engine was in a JD 950, but basically the same engine. Kim Hot Start makes one of the block heaters that fits in that plug. The plug in cord can be removed when not in use, reasonable price. I only plugged mine in a couple of hours before use and it was more than enough of a pre-heat.

Thanks I'll try heating the engine before removing the plug. I'm getting ready to place an order with Hoye so I'll order the heater also.

Might think about loosening the plug before placing the order.

Block heaters vastly improve winter starting. Even if the engine will hammer to life stone cold . The block heater reduces wear on the entire electrical system . Cylinder wall wear and oil dilution is also reduced.
Tier IV operators in puttering around applications in particular should consider a timer and block heater.

I finally got around to installing the block heater. I could not believe it when I put the power handle on it came out like it had been installed yesterday instead of 30+ years ago. I think this will be an asset this winter when I'm setting out round bales. 0925151100.jpg0925151121.jpg0925151121a.jpg

That reminds me, most of you guy's are prolly the 2nd or 3rd owner. I had one [336D] I bought new (with books). They recomended in the cold weather to warm up the trans by putting the trans in neutral and moving the p/s lever into either forward or rev. for a while circulating the oil with no load. This was of course with the engine running.
