Tractor
Yanmar 336D
My tractor suddenly stopped moving today when I shifted the power shift lever from 2 to 3 (w/o clutching). It stopped moving and it made a horrible grinding noise. Disengaging the clutch makes the noise stop. I pushed the power shift lever to 2, 1, neutral, changed range etc the tractor wouldn't move and the noise is there as soon as I engage the clutch. I can move the power and range shift levers freely, the transmission oil level is full. I changed the transmission oil and hydraulic filter and cleaned the suction screen about 30hrs ago. I was harrowing a sandy area with 4 diamond harrows when it happened. I own the YM336D for about 5 years and have put on 200 hrs (it has 950hrs total) moving snow, haying about 15 acres each year and moving some dirt.

There is no Yanmar dealer here. I've fixed my share of tractors but I'm new to Yanmar and I'm looking for hints. Has anyone had this happen to them?

Thanks,

Felix

You probably stripped the spline coupler where the clutch shaft attaches to the trans.(if you are lucky)
You will have to split the tractor to replace it.If you are in high range, and shift from 2 to 3,it just slams in gear, and I always use the clutch, and let off the throttle. I don't care what they say, something is going to break if it slams into gear.

Thanks for the reply. It sounds like something might be stripped.

I split the tractor and the coupler is stripped. So I guess I'm lucky. Got to get the parts now. But first I want to check clutch wear etc.

Have you replaced or changed the hydraulic filter? The filter is like a long tube with an olefin membrane. Usually, it's found at the rear of the tractor with a 3 bolt pattern cover. Make sure to have at least a 8-gallon or more bucket under there. Clean the area around it too before starting. NEVER back flush the olefin membrane filter, doing so will destroy it. If you have a fine mesh strainer, strain the oil and use again. Drive a little while and repeat to take out the inside nasty shavings and junk. Look at the Hoye tips and helps down the left column about this filter too.

Also, if the above did not work, you may need to get a new hydraulic pump. Others here who have been through this could chime in on this topic.

Have checked filter, it's clean, changed oil, if it is the pump why is pressures in first and reverse ok ?

I believe this came up before. Yrs..... ago. And the problem was in the valve body. Fredricks calls it the, Power Shift Cover (Regulator) and Gasket. A pic of it is on p.124 Trans. It needed cleaned and a couple Valves in it was rusty. Worth checking into.

Thanks, I have seen a photo where gasket was broken causing this problem, waiting for manual before I take it apart, thanks for the input I want to do easy stuff first before having to split tractor.

Don't blame you. The Manual will be a big help. I don't think your going to need to split it to get to it. Maybe wrong but I don't think I am.

Even with a parts manual, those exploded assembly diagrams are worth reviewing too. Wonder if Winston has that area for your model?

OH yeah, I remember now, the YM336 is the aka YM3110 or John Deere JD950. There is a place to get that info right now.
