Does anyone have any advise on what to look for on this little engine? It runs and starts fine after it warms up. When cold it just pops and farts. I used a salamander heater to warm it up and then it will start. I have already checked the glow coil in the intake manifold and it works well with fuel valve opening and igniting. Compression seems good (equal in all cylinders). Any help would be appreciated as the snow is piling up around here!

Have you checked out the fuel delivery system like filters etc.
How cold is cold?
Do you use a fuel addative?

My 180 was the same way when I bought it. It had been outside for a while and just needed a good going over. Make sure your fuel is clean. If it's cold, use an additive to increase cetane and prevent gel up. Check for leaks between bowl and pump. If fuel can get out, air can get in. After changing fuel filters and putting on new lines, I switched to road fuel (47 cetane) with Power Service additive, and the tractor started like a new one!!

The fuel and system must be good, but one of the most important things for easy starting is to be sure the valve clearances are exact. No matter how good your fuel is, the timing is critical. When each piston is at top dead center, the clearance should be .008".
