YM1700 fuel issue

Evening all--new here, and have what I think is an injector pump issue.

Bought a Yanmar 1700 in pieces a bit ago, put new head, rings/piston and injectors in. Starts easy with the decomp valve and runs, but has a lot of White smoke--thinking it's not burning all the fuel it's dumping through the injectors. Will throttle out and die below about 600 RPM's, and doesn't really want to get over 2,000 RPM's.

Have already removed the tank and cleaned it, new fuel filter and fresh diesel. Ran for 15 mins with little change.

Any ideas? I can get a new injector pump from Hoye for about $350, but don't know if it needs any shims, or if my current one is bad (or how to even test it). Guessing the P/O didn't take care of it and got trash in the line.

You might try to retorque your head. White smoke usually indicates excess moisture. You might get some white smoke in a cold engine due to condensation but it goes away fairly quickly. In a warm engine it's cause for concern.

Could also be bad injectors.

U should find out how to check the inj pump timing..
Did u put any shims under the pump when you put it together.??
It’s possible the previous owner took the pump apart and reassembled it wrong.??
I’m leaning on inj pump timing..
