Hi Guys, new man here from England.

I just got this tractor, and the air filter is a pancake type (at least that's what we call it over here). It's a flat round one that sits on top of the engine, about 8" across and 1.5" high. Is this type re-useable (washable)?

Mine is not a washable filter, it is paper and a throwaway type. Any of the dealers on this site will have the filter.

If it's an OEM Yanmar filter, (metal frame, fabric filter), it should be. Mine on my YM2000B is. I washed it once in hot soapy water and used it for a while, then washed it again, put it away, and started using a NAPA filter. The Yanmar filters are about $50 US if you can get them. Should be NAPA #2297.

We have an aftermarket for $12.85 that is specifically made to replace the OEM...metal housing and all. The problem with the NAPA and others is that if you measure you will find a tiny (something like 1/32") difference, but it is enough, expecially if the neoprene seals top and bottom are old, to allow dust/dirt through. For those who say it makes no difference, I offer this...we have rebuilt two heavy use YM2000s....by heavy use, I mean 600-800 hours per year, in commercial ag application. Both were using the "almost fits" replacement, and seemed to have pulled regular maintenance. In both cases rings were really eaten up. Just an fyi.........

When I first got my 1700 it had a wix filter. I replaced with OEM filter but a year later had to replace worn out rings.

My OEM filter is paper not washable:confused:

I've also seen your previous note describing a new top cover for the OEM enclosure, with fresh neoprene. Is the whole housing available, to provide a new seal below the filter and also to the manifold?

What do you recommend as an overall maintenance program - just the aftermarket filters, the new cover and washable oem filters, or some adaptation to use napa filters, or ?? It would be nice to have a couple of washable filters, and alternate them.

Seems like you could run a bead of silicone sealer around where the filter meets the housing to take up that extra little space. Let it cure up and then be safe using the after market filters.

Yes, you could...until part of that bead comes loose, gets sucked into a cylinder, and........

That's also assuming the "almost fits" aftermarket is the proper micron size, etc. You can also find many oil filters that will fit on the 2000, some of which are absolutely not good for it because of flow specs. But it's your tractor, so have at it. This aftermarket duplicate costs us more too, but we use it since it became available because we know it's the proper thing to do for the machine.

Welcome Dave,

Mine came with a non-paper filter, the element is gray, almost steel wool looking. I took it to be washable, but don't know for sure. I got a deal on several after market filters ( not NAPA ) shortly after buying my B. They fit tight in the canister. I would say they work fine, as the last time I changed the element, the idle speed increased by 200 RPM. I still have the original element also just in case.

That would be the washable expensive filter. The NAPA 2297 seals my 2000B perfectly, absolutely nothing gets inside the filter, or if it does it's all getting sucked into the engine, leaving absolutely no residue.
