Just bought my 1300D tractor and the front four wheel drive doesn't work.

When I for forward or reverse in 4x4, then the front end pops and pounds up and down.
Fluid is leaking out of the right front hub on the inside.

Does anyone know what this could be?
Could I fix it myself by buying the part that's broken
Is the front disassembly complex?

Thanks
Dean

That's not a good sign.

It's hard to diagnose without more information. When you say the front end pops and pounds up and down, what part of it do you mean? Sometimes the front driveshafts on these lose the ball bearings in the CV joint, or just wear out, and this can cause a popping and shuddering from the front end, and the driveshaft can bang around, but the front axle should not be moving up and down, ever.

How much fluid is leaking from the hub? Do you mean inside the wheel, where the spindle emerges from the knuckle, or do you mean the inside somewhere else? Most all of these weep a little oil.

You can probably do the the job yourself if you are reasonably mechanical, have a decent set of tools, patience, and the willingness to spend some time figuring things out in a clean, controlled environment.

Can you take some pictures for us, and give a little more specific detail about what is going on?

Welcome to the forum. Hopefully we can get you up and running soon!

Yes the term shuddering is a better term to describe what is happening.
When in 4x4, I go against a tree and the rear tires spin, but the front tires do not rotate at all.
It looks like the top of the knuckle is moving up and down. Shuttering up and down. Tires do not spin.
When I picked it up, there was about 1/4 cup of fluid on the floor in that man's garage.
Drove it around for a few minutes. Bought it and put it in my truck.
While transporting it about 2 hour drive, oil splashed out of that knuckle.
I am going to go get some pictures and will send.
really appreciate your help

I would try jacking up the front axle one side at a time and seeing if there is any wobble or free play in the axle spindle or knuckle to start. Try spinning the tire one way then another. If the transmission is in 4wd, there should be only a little bit of free play in the tire; not a quarter turn. In 2wd, you should be able to spin one tire and hear the driveshaft spinning. You should at least be able to isolate which side(s) and the area of the problem with this.

That's great to have the parts break down schematic. Thank you so much.
I will break it down and take some pictures and upload them ASAP.

Also, where can one get a Front End Loader for the Yanmar 1300D
I also want a ROPS for it.

Thanks,
Dean

I did find some play on both sides of the front end.
Should the seal (#38) be visible when all is assembled?

If the rubber parts are rotted out on the tie rod ends, should I buy new tie rod ends and replace?
or is it okay as is?
Thanks
Dean

Seal #38 should not be to visible. Take a picture so we can see what you are questioning.

I would not worry about the tie rods. Mine have been loose for 3 years now. I have a new link for my 1500 in the garage but waiting to replace them. Just keep them greased. Unlike a car, you're not going to have them subjected to road grime and many miles. If you want, napa could probably find your a close match to install.

What do you mean by "play on both sides of the front end"? What parts are you talking about? I would advise against pulling everything apart until you have taken some pictures and figured out what exactly you are trying to find through disassembly. Without a target, you don't have anything to focus your investigation on. Taking it apart without knowing the goal will just yield a pile of parts, I'm afraid.

Okay, I found alot of free play or wobble on the right front wheel. With the front end on stands, I can grab the front wheel with my hands. One on the top and one on the bottom, and the whole spindle moves along with the steering arm. I have loosened the steering arm and supported the knuckle with a jack, pushing the knuckle up as far as possible, then take a hammer and hit the steering arm down a bit. This actually made the 4x4 work without sliipping gears. But it does still slip gears occaisionally and oil still leaks out of the top of the knuckle.

I'll take some pictures ASAP.
