Yanmar 2500
Folks I'm new to the forum and operating a tractor. Just bought the YM 2500 and was trying to pull up small trees. Pressed the lever to engage the locked differential and it has remained that way. Is there some simple means of disengage the lock? It probally has not been operated in a while and it is stuck. Lifting the pedal does nothing. Any ideas would be appreciated.

While I do not have a Yanmar tractor. You might want to determine what caused the problem. The following was taken out of the manual for my tractor.

To prevent damage to drive train, DO NOT engage differential lock when one wheel is spinning and the other is completely stopped.

Driving forward and backward a few times, and attempting to turn both directions, will help equalize the tension in the locking mechanism. In the long term, a good greasing and replacement of the transmission fluid with new, slicker fluid may help keep it from binding up.

To all that responded, thanks for the info. I'm sure I'll be back with more questions as I discover more about the tractor and the depth of my lack of knowledge.

Lincolnton Ga. Nice!! I use to be a member at a Hunting camp on James-Younger Rd. YRS. ago. I would love to get over that way and see how much things has changed or grown. Also put alot of seat time on a 2500. I liked it alot and very few problems with it. The only one's we had were operator error or just learning what not to do. Easily corrected or taken care of. The Pto gears takes some getting use to but thats about the only thing I didn't care for. On parts Steve at Spalding Tractor in Griffen should be able to get anything you would need for it. Thats were it came from refurbished.

I wished mine would stay locked. I wouldn't have to keep my foot on the pedal all the time.

I have almost the same tractor, YM3000, they were built on the same frame. Mine is sticky sometimes, foward and reverse a little and the pedle returns to the up position. The thing has lots of roll pins in the assembly, check every one, make sure it is in place and not locked against the casting somewhere. If pins are loose in their holes, take them out and drive a small punch into the center making them a little bigger and tighter fitting. If that still doesn't unlock it, take the cover off the top of the trans removing the shift lever with it. Think you can see far enough in to the trans to figure out what is happening. Fast and easy. Never attempt to make a turn with this thing engaged, you will develope a problem fast, something shears, not good.

Pressing one brake then the other while rolling should relieve the binding and disengage the diff lock.

If that won't do it then you need to look inside, as Chris said.

Good one.

I have said that a time or two sure was nice of Yanmar to include that feature my last 2wd tractor didn't have one it was worthless because of it.

I am grateful for sure but a button on the dash sure would be nice! :D

I agree with Chris and California and thankfully Winston has the internal diagrams just in case its either a sticky plunger thru the case from lack of use/lube or internal.

When I first got mine it was stuck also (unlocked luckily) had several coats of paint and tons of rust under that it was bad and took a bunch of spray oil to free it up. I expected it to leak like a sieve afterwards but its been fine ever since.

Looks like they still have a few smaller Yanmars listed on their website so Id say yes? (they sell new LS tractors also fwtw)

Are they still around?

Didnt that member Houston Scott??, i think, just buy one from them within the past year? He was praising them and the quality he got.

Maybe they got out since his, maybe they actually were rebuilding them at that point and it cost them way to much to actually fix stuff.

Yeah he was definitely a mouth piece for them  dont know how close the relationship really was or the dynamics of it but they seemed pretty tight back then maybe a little too coincidental who knows? ;)

I hope he did get a good machine he has every right to cuss it or praise it just like we all do but in the long run hope he is still happy with the brand if nothing else. :)
