I plan to start using a rough cutter (brush cutter) with my YM 2000 tractor and would like to know if an over running clutch is needed. I have used a finish mower for about (2) seasons and never felt it pushing the tractor when I push the clutch in. Does the rough cutter react different?

Thanks for any replys.

I'm pretty inexperienced with tractors and I run an over-running clutch on mine. Guys with much more experience than I've got all say they wouldn't think of running without one. I think there's a lot more energy stored in the rotating disk of a brush hog than in the rotating blades of a finish mower.

Guys, is that right?

The 2 long rough cut blades have a lot more momentum than the finish mower 3 short blades. Use an over running clutch.

I agree, picture a large truck (18 Wheeler) going 40 mph and trying to stop vs a car.(just to give you some idea.)You should be able to pick up a over run cluch for 40.00-50.00.

JRB,

The enregy W stocked in a rotating blade is in proportion of the square of its lenght L let's speake W=a*L*L.

It means that if you multiply the lenght of a blade by :

A factor 2 the energy stocked will be multiplied by a factor 4
A factor 3 the energy stocked will be multiplied by a factor 9
A factor 4 the energy stocked will be multiplied by a factor 16

So I confirm that you must use an over-running clutch.

Not only the baldes.. but many rough cuttters use a stump jumper as a blade carrier. That's a pretty big flywheel.. figure the blades too, and that's alotta stored energy!

Where is the best place to buy the quick release over running cluch and what is a fair price for one?

Any place that sells tractor supplies should have them, or you can order one here.

Be prepaired to pay 25-50$ for a pin on one.. and 50$ to 80$ for a quick release. cheaper quick release will be a thumb button.. higher price ones will be a sliding collar.. etc..

Tsc sells them..
