B7100HSD w/ B1630C loader
I have not seen much on TBN about the Yanmar YM 140. I have a chance to buy one for $2500. The tractor is 2wd with a loader and a trailer to haul it The general shape looks good in the pictures but I do not know the hours and according to the owner the starter is broken. The starter has been broken since October. I will get a chance to look at it later but what I want to know is: Are there any big or small maintenance issues I should be aware of with these little tractors? Is there anything I should look at carefully?

Hi Chuck:

The big question is why didn't the owner fix the starter for a hundred bucks and sell a running tractor (with a loader) and trailer for $2800.00? It would be worth it then.
Without it running my, my that's a gamble.
If it's nearby find out if you can get the starter fixed, then if it's okay then buy it. If not you're only out a twenty minutes and a C note.

Whatever happens good luck Chuckanut.....

Is it possible to get the tractor running with out the starter?

You know by the old fashioned pull and pop the clutch routine  (this starting technique is not supported by this use but in the event of an emergency)

Well yes, but with a loader... it needs to be raised and supported securely, sure would be unpleasant if it dropped while being towed.:( I'd also like to see it start on it's own, can check other things at same time..but yes it can be done.

Is the starter broken or the teeth on the flywheel chewed up? Questions to ask. A good starter shop should be able to fix the starter if it is gummed up inside. Maybe a bad solanoid? A bad key switch? With the key is turned on, try a jump start from the battery to the solanoid positive terminal if you can get at it easly. This will eliminate the key switch as being bad. See if it turns over. Open up the decompression lever in case the engine is locked up. Keep us informed as to what you find.

Do a search of this forum on "YM140." I think it is a rare model, hard to find parts for. Maybe that's why the owner hasn't repaired it.

Well, he sold it before I got there. I did not even get a chance to see it in person. I guess someone thought it the starter was no problem.

Back to searching for the perfect tractor.
Thanks for you help

It's not a rare model, Yanmar still has a lot of parts for the YM140, including the starter. I think they have over 20 of them. There is a cheaper aftermarket starter.

Greetings everyone! I guess it depends on how you define "rare". I own a YM 140D and I've only seen one or two on the Internet in the five years I've owned mine, and really no info. on this website about this particular model. I can say its a tough little tractor, very well made. I really enjoy mine, though if money were no object, I'd own a bigger (20-25hp) 4wd tractor. Sometimes I think I work it too hard. Good luck in your search.
