Yanmar
I recently acquired a Yanmar ym2000 from a friend of mine, he stated that it was running but sat for a yr or so . I attempted to get it started with no luck. Initially the fuel filter housing was low, I cracked the filter and it drew fuel in, I then cracked the discharge lines from the fuel pump, they seemed to pump fuel ok, I then cracked the lines at the injector, they had fuel squirting. I then tried to crack the bolt on top the injectors with the hose between each injector and no fuel would come out, can anyone provide troubleshooting steps as to why it won't start and fuel is not coming from the bolt/hose above the injectors? Also where is the best place to find a parts breakdown or oder parts? The pto shaft seal is leaking thanks for any help!

Since the Fuel bowl was half empty go through this How to bleed air out of the fuel system Pay attention to#4 no fuel coming out and I believe the line you talking about is just a return to my Tank.

Line on top of injector is only stem leak by. Don't expect flow there.

yea there wont be flow at that bolt your talking about. You dont even need to crack the lines near the injectors.

I think you may have a compression problem or battery problem?

How fast is it cranking? Hook jumper cables to it and a running car/truck to boost the power to it. Crank with the Decompression valve flipped on. what color is the smoke comeing out of the stack?

What does the oil look like? The radiator fluid?

Since every thing "always runs last time i used it or parked it" why did he say he did not use this tractor in a year or two?

Thanks for everyone's advice I will try to re-bleed the system, what type of battery do you recommend is there something I can pick up at walmart or autozone that will get me by for now what cca or deep cycle?, my expenses are adding up quick since the purchase of this land , I love it just need to spread something outs. I will post back once I try to bleed injectors but may be a week or so, there was a little gray smoke from exhaust while trying to start.

Battery is simply the biggest one that will fit the space. Also cleaning every connection including ground can improve cranking speed. Assisting the battery with jumper cables from another vehicle might be all you need for a first start.

I tried a deep cycle start/marine battery and it failed prematurely. Apparently they can't take the jarring a tractor gets.

Make sure the Thermostart gets hot (manifold warm to the touch), and it receives fuel from the little bowl.

Bleeding is just at filter input, filter out (2 screws on top of the filter) then the screw at the pump input. In that order. No need to bleed beyond pump, the pressure will take care of that.

A little bit of gray smoke does sound like insufficient fuel. Adequate fuel would give white vapor (unburned fuel) or plenty of gray smoke if it will almost run. Yanmar recommends full throttle while starting then drop immediately to 1500 rpm.

I assume you are using the compression release. Crank it with compression released then let go of the release and keep cranking, so the inertia of the flywheel assists the starter.

Why do you think you need a battery?

California is spot on! like he said the manual calls for the throttle to be all the way open on your tractor that is the lever pulled all the way toward you, reverse of american tracors.

The battery failed a load test ad won't take a charge, during initial attempt to start I was jumping it from my truck, I am going to attempt to start tom am using everyone's advice and new battery

I've had a 550cca. in my 2000 for the last 7yrs. and I see no reason it's not going to last longer. The dealer I bought it from put it in. I would say it's not a Wolly World Spec.. And IMO. if you go that way which most likely I will also I'll go up to a highest that will fit Like California stated. Your need it In the Winter. And by the way Bel Air.Hartord co. before coming to Ga . ;)

I would still use your truck cranked and jumped to the batter till you get it started so that repeated starts dont drain the battery too much. It maybe a fuel and cranking speed issue.

Make sure to use that Decompression lever by your left knee under the dash when in seated position. the lever should flip away from to tractor to open the valves and flop back toward it to close them.

what does this mean? Your just saying that Bel Air, hartford Colorado will need it before you will in GA?

 It's Hartford Co. MD.. Give me a break Clemsonfor my hand about gave out. Been doing Bills for the last few days. Sorry about my Typo. I'm pretty sure he new or will know what I was saying.:ashamed:

I am originally from Baltimore county, I live in calvert county but the tractor is at my camp in somerset county, now for the bad news.. I installed the battery bled the fuel system as everyone instructed, and cranked it over about 10 different times some using starting fluid some without. No luck, when I used fluid there was heavy grey smoke and light grey without fluid, I tried with the compression relief up and down and switching it during the starting attempt with no luck. Where should I go from here? I was thinking about draining the fuel tank and adding new but feel like it might still start for a minute with starting fluid even with bad fuel? The oil is black but doesn't appear milky. Any advice?

Haven't been back in Yrs. I can remember my parents complain of the commute to Baltimore. They both worked in the city 25min. from Rt.45!

On your 2000 If it was mine IMO. I want to know what I have Fuel,Air and Compression. Are you sure the fuel is clean? The starting fluid I would tend to believe it should at least Hit. I would be Draining every Drop out and put good fuel in it. No more Starting Fluid just not worth it. Air, If the Air Filter is Removed rule that out. Only thing left is Compression. You can make one but Hoye's got the setup for that. If you can get the Injectors out and have a pressure gauge all your need is this Yanmar Tractor Parts COMPRESSION TESTER ADAPTER If the Inj. are stuck then you may need the puller also. If the Good New fuel fails my bet your going to find Low Comp.. Your turning over and have some Comp. so you may just need Rings.

Do the injectors just pop out after the retaining bracket is removed? When testing the compression should u only pull one injector at a time and put the gauge in or pull both injectors at the same time and test with them both out? What should the compression be? Any I rings or anything else I will need to replace? I'm hoping it doesn't end up being the compression and only a fuel problem, might order that adapter from Hoyt and test next time I go down.

They pop out but you will be the only one to find out how easy. I've heard some that come right out to Buying the remover. The Pressure tester fits in it's place. You can make that also but if it was me that will be ordered while I work on getting the Inj. Out. The bolt hole with the line you was referring to on top is what is used to pull them. Some people has made their own just using the correct Bolt a Nut and a Hm. made retaining frame. If the prev. owner is well known to you lets get the fuel corrected and Darn! certain to move on.

He owns the neighboring property I believe it ran, but I believe he didn't take care of it it was a secondary tractor for awhile. Do I test compression with both injectors removed, or remove one test that cylinder, reinstall remove other test that cylinder.. I've done a lot of gas tests but only 1 diesel awhile ago. Sounds like through everyone's comment ls these things don't take much to run or work on, hopefully we get It figured out soon grass will be growing!
