Yanmar YM1700 (Green)?

Interesting! From the looks of it, It appears to be originally green, I've not seen a 1700 with this type sheet metal/hood , although have seen this in other size ym's , Looking closely I can see the original mint color on the trans./engine/running gear. if it were a repaint this area would likely have been repainted as well,

Your photo is a YM1700-Early with that sheet metal. About 1975~6. Its correct body color is the green you see in my avatar. Same colors apply to its larger twin YM2000.

Your Craigslist version of green looks to be a repaint. I think that is a later hood decal too.

They went to front hinge hood and red paint for Second Series after a couple of years production. A few parts are different between first/second series, not much. After this many years the two versions should perform identical.

Here are sales brochures for the Early and Late US version of YM2000. (The US Yanmars stayed green through Second Series). YM1700 is nearly identical to YM2000 but with smaller-bore cylinder sleeves, smaller tires etc.

I called the owner and spoke with him about this tractor. He was told it had new sleeves and rings when he purchased it. It had began to smoke a little but as his son was mowing a week or so ago it blew the dipstick out and had bad blowby. I believe they pulled it to the shed to park. The owner is on the road at this time but planning on trying to crank it in the next few days and hopefully learn more. Son said tractor never knocked or made unusual noises. Owner also stated it still had coolant. This is my story and I'm sticking to it. Based on that what's the diagnosis? I've an opinion but want yours first.

Combustion in the crankcase and no coolant loss ... Cracked piston or rings?

Maybe the rebuild didn't leave enough ring gap.

We'd like to hear what you find.

mine is the same.. except painted yellow!

I'd expect a detonation inthe crankcase to blow that sucker out!

But I think the early ones - Revision Level - (blank) or Level 1, had a slip-in dipstick on the right side.

Or maybe this is a FrankensteinMar.

I have no idea but this is what Hoye shows for the 1700. Yanmar Tractor Parts: DIPSTICK LUB. --- EMAIL FOR AVAILABILITY ---

I did a little more research and I have a pdf parts manual for the 240. It shows an "old type" with the rubber plugged dipstick and the new type with the screw in dipstick. So I guess it depends on which one you have.

A little more evidence. http://www.stevenstractor.com/parts/compacts/yanmar/engine-parts/oil-dipstick-1.html and http://www.stevenstractor.com/parts/compacts/yanmar/engine-parts/oil-dipstick.html

To have built up enough back pressure to blow the dipstick wouldn't the vent have to be clogged/plugged? and it seems to me that the engine would have had difficulties cranking over, unless of course it was being started in decompression mode.
Incidentally: my old Kubota had this type of Dipstick, These type eliminates the confusion as to whether it needs to be screwed all the way in or not? when checking the oil level;)

BTW, I zoomed in the photo and could see the original Green in places as California stated, especially on the wheels, and around the hood area etc, etc, So yes it was a re-paint ... I also notice there were no lights on the fenders,

My Parts Manual. When I change my Oil I insert it to the Threads and it shows up on the Hatch Marks Full at 5qts.

Maybe some of the YM1700's were that darker green.

Here's a CL listing for a YM1700 with darker green hood that looks original, with original decal, while the rest of the tractor is lighter green. (flawless so likely repainted). Maybe he combined two tractors?

Yanmar tractor diesel

He wants only $1500 in claimed excellent condition. There's not much population up in that corner of the state so I think that's lower than what it would go for, nearer civilization.
