That sounds like the manual-transmission version of the red YM186D in my sig file, below. Have you seen the tractor, does it look something like that? If this is what it is, it is a well-supported US-version Yanmar.

It's a model 186 or 187. The machine is in storage and he will check it this weekend.

Ballpark value? Clean, pretty well maintained.

Here is a 2 wheel drive in the East Texas area. If anything, his price is a little high for our area. Just my opinion. Yanmar YM186 Diesel Tractor 18hp

Any other opinions? I know it is just speculation until I have details. My cousin says his machine is 4wd and an "automatic" transmission. Did older Yanmars come with Hydros?

Prices/values vary greatly, but $4500 would be a decent ballpark # for a private purchase in most areas for a YM186D. IMHO if the seller is happy with the price the buyer paid too much. It is known as "powershift".

I've got a love-hate relationship going on with mine right now, but I'm hoping it's going to be long term love once I'm done taking care of the things the previous owner never did.

All kidding aside, I'm not very mechanically inclined. I can check fluid levels and clean-up dirty equipment but beyond that I leave repairs, service, etc. to people who know about this stuff.

I have a great relationship with the local Toro dealer for my Wheel Horse collection. Would the capable service staff there likely be able to do routine service, repairs on a Yanmar? (This dealer does service all brands of residential and commercial lawn, garden, snow removal equipment).

I would assume it would be no problem for them but you may want to give them a call to talk check. These tractors are very easy to work on. Everything is easily accessible and straight forward.
